Looking to possibly add an optic to my 715. I cannot do a barrel-mounted rail, as my barrel is 3" and does not have the proper "rib" that those mount to. Was thinking about adding a small section of rail to the top of the frame, and drilling & tapping between the rear sight, and the barrel threads.
Sight I'm looking into is either an Aimpoint Micro, or some sort of mini-red dot, like the Fastfire or RMR.
Is this okay to do? Anybody else done it?

Mechanically you can do this, understand that you are irretrievably altering a much less common fixed barrel DW. Normally on a DW the shroud is D&T'd, and the shroud can always be replaced. I'd also feel a little uncomfortable drilling into the frame above the cylinder window.
Finally, are you sure you want that weight and bulk on top of a 3" barrel gun? I'd estimate the weight and tape that amount on top of the gun in the right place, and see how it feels.
Except for the length of the rail on this mount, is this what you have in mind?

I came up with using this mount \/
with an aimpoint micro.
I would have to cut the bottom of the mount with the proper radius to match the frame. The right most screw on the mount would be right in front of the adjustable rear sight, and the hole closest to the aimpoint would be right about over the cylinder / barrel gap.
The sight would then overhang off the frame, over the top of the barrel. The front sight would be removed, and I would put a filed-down blank in it's place.
When I get on a desk-top, I will make a half-@$$ paint mock-up.
Another idea I had was to use a Trijicon blank \/
then run a slot up the middle on the underside, and put 2 mounting holes in it. This would make an RMR sit about 1/2 to 2/3's over the frame, and about 1/3 to 1/2 over the barrel. Would be a much lower profile and much more stream-line. Now that I think about it, this would be the better way to go.
Either way, I would use beefy screws, probably 10-32's.
In looking at the aimpoint mount, I am second-guessing if that will work due to the distance between the mounting screws. With the RMR "blank", I can make the spacing a little smaller if need be.
I did a quick measurement tonight, and I have about 7/8" free space, from the front of the rear sight to the inside of the front-strap of the frame. If I used 10-/32 screws (.190 diameter if I recall correctly), and a 1/2 inch spacing, they should fit okay.

I think that Eric at EWKARMS had made a few mounts that clamp on the top strap like in Steve's pic above. You might want to contact him as to whether he has any left. It would probably sit higher but eliminate the need for d&t.
Or better yet this sounds like a fine reason to buy another Dan

The one in my picture is actually Eric's pre-production prototype. We based the design on an old Beuhler mount, with improvements. It pushes the FastFire fairly high above the bore axis, but I shoot that gun at 50 feet only with the same ammo, once it's zeroed it's stays on target.

If you were to remove the rail section, and the rail-mount on the fastfire, then mount the fastfire directly to the mount, you could potentially get it allot closer to the bore, though would limit your options as far as optics go.
