I have a blued shroud for my 15-2 that has some light handling marks and light rub marks from being in the case for years with other BAs.  I was wondering about a polishing it with a cloth wheel on a bench grinder using a very fine jewelry polish compound.  I don't want to turn this into a reblue job so I thought I'd ask the experts before I tried this.  I know there isn't much depth to bluing so I don't want to buff thru the finish, or its off to Hotbluer.

So, good idea or bad?

That's not what I'd be comfortable doing; I'd try Flitz paste first and be carefull with it.  You'll see what I mean if you go that route.  A little at a time and stop before it's too late.

I'd say bad idea.  If it bothers you send it off for a reblue.

This, by all means.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Hadn't thought of Flitz, I think I even have some around here someplace.  I'll try that first.  Its not nearly bad enought to need a reblue, just scuffed a tiny bit.  Thats why I asked before I tried it, I really don't want to reblue it, so I think I try the Flitz.

Hmm... maybe some fine automotive polish or something VERY fine, I don't want to scuff it more than it is.  I'll start super fine and work up from there depending on results.

Flitz won't scuff, but if you use the end of your finger and the rag

loaded with alot of pressure and rub like a mad man ...well...

you see what can happen !

Used lightly, Flitz works well.  Just go lightly and a little at a time.  You'll see what appears to be rust on your rag.  That's actually bluing, so go slow and check often:

Flitz will turn a nice gun into a beautiful gun, but you gotta go slow and easy....

For rub marks & other wear marks, I don't imagine Flitz will help much. Carnuba wax will probably work best, but that all depends on the severity of the marks.

Flitz tends to work best (almost to the point of perfection) on stainless guns. Brass too, but that's another story.smile
