Ok, so I have this six inch ported barrel. Trouble is that when I set the gap at .006" the ports point downward. I'm assuming that when this barrel and shroud were ported they were on a different gun. Since the thread is 17/32 X 40, it will move .025" in one revolution. Seems to me that I should set it up and take .012 or .013" off the end.
Is there some reason I shouldn't? I'm fully aware that there are things that I don't know...

Since the factory ported barrels have holes the whole way around I assume yours is an aftermarket port job? If so it might only line up right on the gun it was originally ported for. I cannot see any harm in taking a bit off the end of the barrel to make it work, but I am not a gunsmith so hopefully someone else here will give their thoughts. If you do machine the end I would go less to start, I like my gaps smaller anyway about .002-.003". Leave room for error you know.
Or you could stick the barrel in a drawer and buy a very nice unported one from EWK to use with the shroud.

Thanks for that. I realize that the magna port won't do much on a Dan, but I'm going to use it. I was thinking .005, but if .003 is better, I'll shoot for that.

MagnaPort will work on a DW if the barrel is properly set to the B/C gap you want, and the "porter" is able to properly index the port to dedicated and isolated position of the barrel ports to the shroud ports and the top dead center positioning of the ports. Otherwise, you can get the ports pushing you off POA.
Porting on a DW is probably a losing proposition unless you are willing to turn it into a fixed barrel gun or understand how DW porting works.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Well, I'm not willing to turn it into a fixed barrel gun, but certainly willing to understand how DW porting works. Tell me more. It will be easy enough to index the ports to tdc, I have a machine shop.
Eric at EWK has .001 shims that are used to position the ports of the compensator he sells. I'm sure you can get them for small change. They go between the frame and the shroud and push the shroud out instead of moving the barrel ports in. As lonwolf said, a .002-.003 gape is best. Using the shims there would be no need for fooling with the barrel. If Eric is out of the shims, PM me with your email and I will send you a couple. I cannot figure out how to PM on my phone so I cannot respond without contact info.

Mmm you better check on the shims, I have an EWK compensator and the shims go out on the end of the barrel and would not have any effect on Chuck's dillemma.
Chuck, if you have machine shop access I could see no harm in taking that small amount off the face of the barrel. Just start small til you get enough that works. There are more knowledgeable guys here than me hopefully they will be by to give input.

Ok, I'll give this one more try. Jody wants pix uploaded to the site. Tried that last night, and the whole post disappeared into the ether.. At any rate, I did some careful measuring and took .012" off the end of the barrel with my ancient surface grinder.
Assembled with a .003 shim between the cylinder and barrel. Lines up nicely if I do say so..
Hmmm, picture number 3 doesn't show up? Back to the drawing board.

Ok, here it is. There's a little learning curve involved.. At any rate, this barrel shoots to the left, compared to other barrels I have. (?) I tried light to heavy loads on a cast 140 grain boolit. Once I quit for the day, and started cleaning up the fair amount of powder residue, I see this.. I'm *assuming* it's lead. Doesn't want to wipe off with number 9. I suppose it's trying to tell me that I should use jacketed bullets only? Is this why it shoots left? There are volumes of things I don't know about this kind of stuff...

That surface grinder is one serious looking tool!
Like most of my tools, it's an antique. It was an antique when I bought it, but unfortunately, some of my other antique tools, I bought new.. Like my other antique tools, though.. it's perfectly capable of doing "modern" work...
