Has anyone ever drilled their own barrel.. porting it themselves ?? ( this was actually a "Jody planted idea" ) I've got an 8" ported Shroud and no matching barrel.. and they don't come up often... I'm getting tired of waiting... can I have a gun smith do that ??

Why or why not.. In your opinions..

laughing hahahahaha... too the point... I was just thinking about smoothing the lands and grooves.. also I was thinking it may be a better idea to get the S/S barrel instead of a blued one.. I don't know why.. just maybe harder..

I don't see why not.

As you said, smoothing it out after punching the holes would be my only concern & If you have the small tools and patience that shouldn't be a problem either.

Take pics, keep us posted!

My 44 has the ported shroud and came with an extra SS ported barrel.  I think they made the ported in SS so they were more resistant to corrosion and easier to clean.

Never shot the ported barrel, so don't know how it works.

Leonard, the ported DW barrels work well, from what I've read & heard. The only problem is that you have to make sure to use jacketed bullets & you need to disassemble the shroud/barrel after each trip to the range, to clean out inside.  Otherwise, soot will build up around the threads & in the open area in the shroud, and make it a bugger to get apart after a while.

I am not a clean freak, so I never used my ported barrel.

Bob Milek discussed this matter: “There are also some special cleaning chores that go with ported barrels.  After shooting 250 rounds, or after each firing session, the shroud shroud be removed and both it and the outside of the barrel must be scrubbed throughly with solvent.  Then, before reassembly, the outside of the barrel and inside of the shroud should be lightly oiled.  The reason for this is that corrosive moisture from the hot gasses tends to deposit between the barrel and the shroud.  If allowed to remain for any length of time, this can seriously damage both the shroud and the barrel.”
