I need help to determinate what is the proper primer for the 357 Max (SM)? I have read all the
posts about reloading the 357 Max . Some loads used small pistol primers(mag) and some used
small rifle (standard and mag). I have been reloading for a long time but I am gearing up to do
my first reloading of the 357 Max and finding it to be a real challenge.
Well, with the primer question out of the way, where do I find BRASS to reload? I ordered two boxes of custom loads( Grizzly Ammo 20 rds each backordered) . I can't seem to find any online.
A couple of weeks ago a friend at work out of the blue ask me if I wanted to buy a revolver
he had it turned out to be a DW 740-8VS . The price was very right so of course I had to buy it.
The gun had been well used and did not included any accessories( no wrench, extra barrel, or gauge, etc. ).
I will post pictures as soon as I can take it apart and clean it as it needs some TLC.

The primer used depends on the pocket depth of the brass (Jamison, Federal, Winchester, Remington) you have. Some makers used rifle depth and others pistol. Maximum brass is hard to find right now. You just have to keep your eyes open and do a lot of searching. Remington is the only manufacturer still producing the brass and there just isn't a large demand for it...yet.
There are smaller commercial loaders such as CNC Cartridge Co. that do supply .357 Maximum loaded ammo and will also custom load ammo for you. (618) 439-9053
The good news is that you can shoot stout 357 MAG loads in there with no issues.
Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

Here is a possible source. Good luck if you choose to chase it.

The brass in LB's Gunbroker link is the same as what I've been using. The 200 I currently have loaded are with CCI400 primers & they seat and function great. Also, 18gr IMR4227 powder & 180gr Speer TMJ bullets.
So far, the 4227 has been my "SuperMag" powder through three different calibers. Next time I load some .357 SM, I think I'll try some Unique to see which one I prefer in this caliber.

Old Dan Owner, I've used one of those for IHMSA silhouette shooting for the
past 25 years, and the load i've found most accurate in my revolver is 19 grains
of either win 296 or h-110, with any 180 grain bullet. In fact, I use the RCBS cast
gas check bullet make for the 35 remington rifle cartridge. Cast of wheelweights and
water quenched, it drops out of mold at 209 grains. It is a very accurate bullet if you
are into casting em yourself. I use nothing but small rifle primers with 296 or h-110.
Those two powders are hard to ignite with plaiin primers.

This is so far beyond what I do, that I stand in Awe of genuine reloaders
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

.357 SuperMag/Maximum...
Small rifle primers.
Different primer pocket depths apply only to large rifle and large pistol primers. Those have different thickness cups. Small rifle and small pistol primers are the same depth. The .357 Max was designed for small rifle primers and 40,000 psi pressures.

Hah!. Me too.
I get all giddy if I remember to put the primer in before I dump in a powder charge.
To the paranoid people who check behind shower curtains for murderers:
if you find one...what's your plan?
Once again Thank You gentlemen for the information on loads and proper primer. I brought the brass on gunbroker I know I overpaid but it was all I could find. Still have not received the ammo
I ordered from Grizzley Ammo, the brass is backordered. Found a box of 180gr bullets ready to
reload. ( The box of 180grainer belong to a friend of mine I blackmailed him into giving them to me.)
