So as things are getting somewhat back to normal, Ha that's a joke ehh ? any one shopping
for components knows you can not just jiggy on down to your local shop and pick up exactly
what you desire these days, so my question...
I'm looking for alternative primer for 357 maximum. I am using 4227 powder and 170 & 180 grn
Sierra and Hornady bullets. I know IMR recommends Remington 7 1/2 SR primers but we don't have
the luxury of primer selection these days. Anyone using something different ? I see Nosler list
a Fed205 SR in an old manual, I also see CCI 400 listed somewhere too but prefer not to use CCI
on my Dans.
Thanks for any and all opinions.

Why don't you like CCI primers in your Dans? They have the hardest cups while Federal have the softest, is that it?
If you're dead set against CCI then Federal or Winchester in that order, maybe.
With the component situation as it is you may not have much choice. You may have to start using what you can get. I've heard the manufacturers don't expect to be up to date till the end of this year. Good luck!

Kim Hobart owner of Bullets and Brass was coming to our local show, didn't know what the
primer selection would be but I had nothing to worry about. They brought something like 400K
in various brands of primers so I had plenty to chose from, ended up getting 10k myself.
You might have heard of Kim, her and Brian Zins ( TV reality show Top Shot ) both took
Nationals at Camp Perry again a few months back.
I guess I'll answer a question with a question...What primer do most Top shooters use ? ?
It sure as hell ain't CCI.... .

While I'm not a top shooter by any stretch of the imagination, I have had good results with Federal and Winchester primers. I also have been able to get them both. On my 357 supermag loads I just use Federal or Winchester small rifle primers, I can't tell any difference, both work equally well.
Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

I don't reload enough to do any primer experimenting. My reloading "mentor" generally prefers CCI, and that is what I have the vast majority of, mostly because that was what was available at the time I did my major stocking up. I've not ever had a problem with CCI, but I do have some Federal 200's I can try out.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Well, I guess I'm an exception- I've never had a Failure to Fire due to a primer. Right now, on my shelf, are CCI, Wolf, Winchester, Federal, Remington and Fiocchi primers. Guess I should make up my mind and settle on a few but hey- that's just me, jack....

I guess I'm a member of the can't make a decision club as well. CCI, Remington, Federal and Wolf. Haven't been reloading long, but have to experience a primer failure.

I have learned that any gun that has been slicked it's Federals. For short throw Dan's, especially in DA, it's Federals.
Federals for me. I will travel miles to buy 'em.
Bingo, we have a winner !
If your throwing thousands of Double Action rounds down range I don't care if it's round one
or round one hundred, when your in the zone ain't nothing more mentally unsettling than a light strike.
And that's not just a Dan problem either by a far margin.
The Single Action shooters don't have much to worry about so...hey have at it, heck I know
guys that still swear by flint and No. 11 caps in their smoke poles but I hope, and I'm totally
serious about this, nobody carries a self made defense load capped with a CCI primer.
