In advance - I appreciate any help sent!

While shooting my newly acquired 7445, I have been having issues with the primers backing out after impact.  These are from hand loaded (Lee LoadMaster) Starline and .445 Gates brass using CCI 300 magnum primers.

When loading the brass the primers is deep into the pocket where its at a minimum flush with the flat part of the brass. Never any above the brass.  When I fire the monster the primer is backing out about .015".  When this happens the drag of the primer against the frame does not allow the cylinder to advance to the next chamber.

While looking for a common denominator I found that this is happening in fully loaded cartridges as well as cartridge/primer only.

Any thoughts?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that is an indication of an overly hot load.  I've only seen that in ultra hot rifle loads.

Happyness is a Hot DW and a pile of used brass!!! Rich

So your saying it also happens when test with a no load primer only

cartridge.

I'm no reloader but it must be a primer pocket, brass, or primer problem.

What else is there ? ? ? confused

Yes - also with primer only (no powder or bullet).

I read posts on other sites that explained the primer only backing out but not with a load.

I only purchased CCI primers (difficult to get anything else in holland, MIlaugh) and was wondering if there is a primer that is slightly bigger or something that will allow it to fit more snugly in the pocket.  I did try a few 50 year old Winchester  large primers and they did the same thing.

is it possible to adjust the clearance between the back of the cylinder and the frame?

If the Starline brass was not bought new, maybe someone reamed it to fit large rifle primers?

Just a thought

They are new.   Looking at a large pistol primer - is there another primer that would be slightly larger and fit mroe snug?

Any Large Pistol primer should work, I'd trend towards the magnum primers though.  Maybe the CCI 350s will fit better?  I wouldn't know why but its worth a shot.  Federal 155 is typically used for the 445 loads.

Jeff, you haven't mentioned how much actual powder you have used in your loads…nor which kind. They are not all created equal.wink

I have had zero primer issues with 4x used brass (thus far) & using CCI 350 primers. I'm not trying to pass this as a "fix-all', but merely saying that I have had no issues.

BTW, my current (& thus far favorite) load for the .445SM is;

IMR 27GR's powder

Speer 300G bullet

CCI 350 primer (in Starline brass)…

This = a big (predicable) BANG every time!wink  lol2

You need to be careful with 445 brass--some of it is reamed for different primers.

How are your primers seating--easy, hard, just right?  Will they seat deeper in the pocket than normal if you continue with a little pressure?

Some guys like to use large rifle primers, which requires a deeper primer pocket.

By the way, I have only shot an empty center-fire shell once in my life. I have shot numerous empty .22 shells in my past, no big deal, but last May I fired an empty .44 Mag at my cat...in the house...in my Super Blackhawk.laugh

That scared the crap outta my cat, but the cylinder locked up tighter than anyting I'd experienced before...in other words, that baby locked up "right now"!surprised  I had to break out some "real tools" to get that cylinder free. It turned out fine, but I learned a couple lessons that day...

1) Don't pull the trigger on an empty center-fire case.

2) I'm how old (?) and I'm still acting like a kid. What a dork. big-grin

your forgot;

3) unhooking the cat from the ceiling is not easy.

4) cat crap sprayed all over is not fun to clean up.

5) the cat knows when and where you sleep.

To the paranoid people who check behind shower curtains for murderers:

if you find one...what's your plan?

Jeff, how about a pic ? Are you sure the primer is unseating and coming

back or is it possible there might be a primer flow problem ?

I ask because S&W had a problem like this in the 80's with oversized

firing pin hole's causing primer flow to lock guns up.
