Looking at a possible project gun, its a Monson 44 mag. Its been shot a good bit and has a nice turn ring, and the star appears worn down, comparing it to my other 44s its thinner. There is also some slop in the cylinder when in full lockup. My question, can a new star be ordered and installed DIY or is it a fitted process with the hand also? If this is a gunsmith or factory job, what would a ballpark price estimate be on something like that?
I can get the gun cheap but don't want to spend a ton to get it back in shape.

Scorpio,
The 2009 parts list has the extractor assembly listed at $48.95 and it says it is a factory install item. If it was me, I would call Keith at Dan Wesson, and ask for a price for him to do it. That would give you the high end $ figure to work off of. I think it would require some fitting.
Or if you get it and the gun still shoots fine, it could be a good shooter even with the wear.
