I want to go to the gun store tomorrow and get a die set for my .445. I'm thinking I can just use a .44 magnum die set to do the job. Will that work OK?
Also I guess I need to crimp the .445 brass pretty hard because of the heavy recoil on the cylinder cartridges don't I?
I've read some of the loading data on powder and primers for the .445. Anyone have in magic loads they want to share?
If you have any suggestions please share them before the mad scientist goes to work on reloading his .445
Thanks, Gary

No access to my magic load data from here; so I can't help. Yes- you can use 44 magnum dies, so unless you find a set of SM dies for a very good price, I'd stick with them. I don't crimp any differently than loading for the 44 mag.
Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

I use the RCBS 18612 .44 Mag dies for mt .445 reloads. At first I was unsure that they would do the job, but they certainly do…and I bet other .44 Mag dies probably would too. The only tedious thing to deal with, if you reload both rounds with the same dies, is setting the expansion & crimp adjustments, because of the difference in height of the two rounds.
My favorite (so far) .445 SM load is; 29gr IMR4227 with a Speer 300gr USCP bullet (I like the big ones heavy) & a CCI 350 primer… lots-o-grins per trigger pull, guaranteed! I agree with Ron, use a medium-heavy crimp on these. If your bullets have a cannelure on them (as my Speer's do), crimp a little deeper for some extra insurance against crimp jump at the range.
Regarding the .445, my daughter says she can't help but giggle every time she pulls the trigger & feels the "big-'ol-BANG"…and you know what? It sure makes me smile, too. BOOM!! hehe!

That's me!
I use Winchester 296 for my SM. 28.8gr of it work very well for the 300gr Hornady XTP or 300gr Nosler JHP. I went up to 29.2gr of 296 with the same bullets, but I was pushing major pressure and would not recommend it at all.
I am doing the legwork for a 200gr Barnes XPB load right now. I may make a thread about my process for designing a new load. Something like a "Help, there is no reloading data for this" tutorial.
For the guys using the 4227, any reason to use that over 296? I can't get 4227 in my area, and would have to mail order it next year (I make a major powder order once or twice a year to cut down on hazmat costs)

I'm no expert, but 200 gr in a 445 will probably be a pretty fast stepper
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I think I'll be nosing right up to 1700fps at max+ a little.....but that's from a 4.something inch barrel. For comparison, my 300gr load is around 1420fps.
This one could be interesting, since the XPB is a completely copper bullet giving it quite a bit of bearing surface. after all, the 200gr XPB is longer than a 300gr JHP. I've got all-copper bullets on lock for my .308 rifle, but I haven't done much reloading with them for pistol.

I'm using the Win. 296 29 gr. with 300 gr XTP and magnum Lg. pistol primers. My chrono shows vel. between 1395-1438 fps. Mine is shooting a little low. I have raised my rear sight as far as it will go. I would need a taller front sight to get where I want it. [Does anyone make taller front sights for DW?] I ordered 100 rounds of 240 gr XTP. I think they will shoot a little higher for me. They will be faster....
