Hi Guys,
Just a quick question about the cylinder release latch...is it supposed to be stiff as in difficult to pull down? I'm spoiled by my Smithy 28 where the latch is butter smooth and the cylinder pops right out....the 15-2 however is another story. I have to use both thumbs to get it to move and then the cylinder comes out. Since I've never had a front frame/crane latch wheel gun before, I figgered I better ask those that know before I go wrenchin on it. The gun is basically new (unshot) no wear is visible...so could the latch housing be clogged with dirt/dust and need lubing?
Thanks for any advise.....

The cylinder latch shouldn't require two thumbs and excessive force to open it up. However, I do have one that has the same characteristics that you are describing. Mine is the result of a very tight fit between the latch and the notch in the frame that the latch locks into. Rather than take a file to anything I just live with it. You might want to take out the latch retaining screw, remove the latch, and clean out the inside of the slot just to make sure there are no obstructions in there that may be binding it up.

The crane could be bent as well, just because it hasn't been fired much doesn't mean someone hasn't flipped it open over and over.
Look at the gap between the crane and frame from the front (unload it first) as you close it, see if the middle of the crane hits just before the top gets there.
If this is the case, the force outward on the latch caused by the "spring action" of the bent crane could make it hard to open.
I am always looking for broken, ugly, or cheap guns to buy.
(I know it isn't a DW but, it's a cool pic)

First step is to pull the latch off and check for a broken spring or to clean up real good in the latch spring area.
If you look in the parts schematic in the Small Frame Manual
https://www.danwessonforum.com/wp-content/uploads/small-frame-manual.pdf
#23 is the Latch Retaining Screw, which when removed using a very small jewelers screwdriver, will allow removal of
#24 the Latch, which will give you access to
#25 the U shaped Latch Spring.
This area gets loaded up with incredible amounts of crud, which does not allow the latch to move easily.
Also, check the frame notch that the Latch locks into, this area needs thorough cleaning, sometimes with a dental pick, to remove build up
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Thanks for the heads up Steve. The latch had some black crud in it that came out with a pick and some CLP….then I used a can of compressed air and blew out a decades worth of dust from the latch, a drop of CLP, some compressed air and a drop of 3-in-1 oil. The results were amazing and fast! The latch cycles very easily now and clicks into place smoothly. I will do a total take down after I study the schematics and the disassembly post more. There is no wheel gun 'smith close to here that I trust to bail me out of a stoopid move. Thank you gentlemen for all your help. Now to get out to the range and take her dancin'
