So, I finally got my 744 after realizing that getting a 745 for anywhere near my price range was a pipe dream. I love it, but I still want a .45. I know people bore old S&W 28 cylinders and barrels to .45 Colt. Would it be possible to take a 744 cylinder and bore it to .45 Colt specs and then get a new barrel or ream and sleeve a .44 barrel? Is the thread pitch on the 744 different than the pitch of the 745? I happen to work at a machine shop (I'm a CNC Machinist) so having a barrel made wouldn't be super hard.
Another issue also comes up, if I were to source another 744 cylinder, would it time properly with my existing frame or would I have to re-time it? And where would I find another cylinder? Does Norwich make new 744 cylinders?
And I know, I could just off my 744 and try to track down a 745, but I like projects.

SO..as is said, "with enough money, (or tools and talent) anything is possible". Can it be done? Sure. Should it be done is a completely different question. It's your project so who am I to have a say?
You can get a new cylinder from DW. Also get an ejector and a hand while you are at it- probably an ejector rod too, just in case you bend the original. You COULD find a .452-.456" barrel blank and bring it down to the correct outside dimension and then thread it for the 744 frame and nut. Now the tricky part; boring out the new 744 cylinder to 45 Colt dimensions. If it's not on axis with the bore of the barrel- you'll never get any accuracy out of it and could experience "shaving" the bullet as it jumps the gap. Finally, you would want to send the new cylinder, ejector, and hand installed to a COMPETENT gunsmith for timing.
I think that's it?
Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

Cylinder and extractor are listed as "Factory Install" on the DW/CZ parts list. They would likely sell them to an established, qualified gunsmith, I think.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I'm really not up on all this but, would the forcing cone be an issue, too?
I think that manufacturing/re-manufacturing a barrel would have to include the correct forcing cone dimensions
