I recently discovered my early 7445 (1990) has chamber throats smaller than .429.
I am sure this is the cause of pressure problems I always had with this gun,
especially with converted rifle brass. I quit shooting it after DW fixed it the second
time for excessive cylinder endshake.
I would like to find a good gunsmith that specializes in this kind of work.
Know any?
MagNaPort did an excellent action job on a S&W 629 of mine including recutting
the barrel throat. I have asked them if they have a DW expert, but so far no reply.
Thanks for any information! .....Nemo.....

Are you able to get the cylinder off ? Remove grip, push in trigger assembly
lock button behind trigger guard, remove trigger assembly, remove crane
lock and pull out crane and cylinder. I would contact Eric at EWK arms.
I bet he can do it. If not any good machinist should be able to open up
those cambers, I would not think they would have to be an expert on

Thanks for the info. I have been in contact with Eric.
MagNaPort has recommended Ron at American Arms Engineering so I will give
him a call as well.
An example of what a barrel throat re-cut from MagNaPort looks like and the
shooting results. Not shown is the 26 grain target which was as good and I settled
upon for use in all the magnums.
I am not considering a barrel mod for the 7445 as it almost looks like it is chrome
plated. Is that true? My Beretta shotguns are and I like it!

It's the chamber throats. I included that last picture just as an example of the
kind of work MagNaPort can do. A regulation jacketed bullet will not go thru
the chamber throats. I don't plan on doing anything to the barrel as it looks
like it might be chrome plated.

Scorpio:
The bullets are supposed to be .429 although I have some cast SWC's that
are as large as .432.
The chamber throats are all over the place going as high as .432 in S&W's made
in the 80's. I have several of these hence the larger cast numbers. S&W
chamber throats have gotten smaller over the years and are now right about
minimum. The Charter Bulldog I just got is right at .429. A jacketed bullet
just barely will go thru the throats.
Having chamber throats too small is obviously a bigger problem than having them too large.

DW barrels are not chromed lined like Beretta's , If you really want
the throat opened up it can be done. If you don't want to do that
you can purchase a new barrel from DW for $105 and have Keith
measure the throat before he sends it if you really want to fix the
problem.

Thanks for the idea. My problem is with the cylinder chamber throats being too
small BUTT: I did not realize the barrels were still available. Stocking one
or 2 to play with might not be a bad idea. Be interesting to directly compare
a 17° barrel throat with the factory one.
