Y'all explained to me in the new member forum that my new Dan Wesson is a model 9, which is a 38 special on a 357 frame. I assume that means that the revolver can handle any reasonable 38 special load, including loads at the 38-44 level. I am generally happy to shoot light loads and have no strong need to try to really push this revolver, but I am interested in working up a hot load for fun. Does anyone have any 38-44 loads using Unique?

Firstly, there are two basic frame designs for DW's, small and large. The Model 9 like yours, uses a small frame, which is chambered in; .22LR, .22Mag, .32Mag, .38Spl and .357Mag calibers. The large frames are chambered in; .41Mag, .44Mag, 45LC, .460Rowland, etc. and the longer SuperMags in .357Max, .414 and .445
Secondly, the DW is robust enough to handle pretty hot loads, especially uding only .38Spl.

I have to ask is there any info as to why the DW never looked into producing the .454 casull?
Timing probably ... the .454 Casull, basically a lengthened and structurally improved .45 Colt case, was considered a wildcat cartridge from it's introduction in 1959. It didn't go mainstream until 1997, when Ruger began chambering its Super Redhawk in this caliber. Taurus followed with the Raging Bull model in 1998 and the Taurus Raging Judge Magnum in 2010.
It would be possible and probably fairly easy to convert a Supermag to 454. Using a Supermag cylinder and a 45 LC barrel. The only problem would be rethreading the the barrel to screw into the Supermag frame. I do not know what the thread count is on the frame end of the Supermag barrels. Shirley one of the four Supermag calibers would work. Does anyone have info on that?
I just measured the rowland cyl. the length is 1.76" and it will take some 45 LC rounds if they are short cases. iv'e loaded and fired some. the best thing to do is have some cases set aside for the 7460 aka 45lC. that way you can eliminate the moon clips.the hornady book says the 45 win mag is hotter than the 45LC. with the 250 gr. Sounds like i need to spend some time at the loading bench!
