Has anybody every successfully removed ”rubbed on” brass left on a shroud by a B-Square mount? It looks more like a heavy deposit than scratched into the Shroud. I'd like to see,but not sure how to remove brass without removing bluing.

Since brass is copper and zinc, I'd try a copper solvent.  No idea or first hand knowledge, really; just trying to break down the problem.

You could also use electrolysis:

I've cleaned several MILSURP guns using this method- just keep an eye on it; eventually, I suppose, it could remove the bluing.  Although I've never experienced any bluing issues.

Best Regards, Ron

I use the electrolysis tank all the time for rusty stuff--if you guys have any questions i can answer them.

I started out using theprocess to restore old rusty vises.  It truly is amazing...goes in rusty, comes out looking like it was straight out of casting mold.

Very rare i use it on gun parts--I did some old Llama parts once to ensure they were truly clean before Parkerizing.

Thanks Guys,

The electrolysis tank sounds really interesting to me (for a bunch of reasons), but am not set up for it right now.  However, I do like Ron's idea, I'll try some copper remover. I know that will not hurt the bluing, but not sure if it will remove brass or just copper. I am not up on my Chemistry lol2.

I'll take some "prior photos" before I try the copper solvent just in case it does work..

No problem Shoot. I think I will set one up if I can find the room (which is when I build my outbuilding).

Ron, THE COPPER SOLVENT WORKED GREAT! I will post some pics when I get to the computer. Hardly a scratch under the removed brass. I would never have bet on that.

As promised, before and after photos. Sorry it took so long to post. Notice the scratch mark above the brass mark on the before photo for reference when looking at the after photo.

Before:

After (the brass mark would have been above the scratches in this photo):

After Copper SolventImage Enlarger

It took about 5 go arounds of: drop some copper solvent on the brass spot, lightly rub with Q-Tip, wait 5 mins, brush off with Q-Tip. Repeat...
