Here's a pretty nice little tutorial from a guy on AR15.com on fixing up issues with stainless guns:
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Mother's Mag and Aluminum Polish should work. It is working nicely on my 740. It is time consuming. I'm using a blue Scotch Brite pad. I've heard some use a green Scrotch Brite. I went with blue as it is less abrasive than green. That video author uses cotton from a t-shirt.
White ScotchBrite (hard to find) is actually the least abarasive that you will find. Mother's Mag Polish is great for hand work, I don't have the patience for hand work, I like power (More Power!) tools. Usually gets me into trouble faster!

I need to find the white pads or try cotton rags. (I also need some of the 2500 grit paper for the sharp edges.) The blue pads are doing a nice, albeit somewhat slow, job of removing the matte gray. They are leaving some very, very fine scratches. They are so small that I can't photograph them. Still the shroud is looking a lot better. Definitely polished, almost chromed or nickeled looking. I'll get some decent pics of it up this weekend.
