Anyone have experience handloading shot loads WITHOUT the plastic cups? Want some snake loads for my .41 Magnum and shot cups aren't available in .410 cal.
I've seen references to sandwitching the shot charge between two gas checks which sounds reasonable but no help calculating starting charge of either powder or shot. Wondering if I can weigh up a charge of shot + gas checks equivalent to a standard cast bullet and use the starting powder charge for that bullet?

hadn't really thought about it before, but after a couple sips of Pinot, I'm thinking a .410 wad with a cardboard overcard might be the ticket. Weigh the wad, shot, and overcard, then use that weight to determine the charge. If you're compressing the powder, maybe you could cut the height of the wad down.
If that doesn't work- then use the gas-check sandwich as above and weigh all the componenets to determine the starting charge.
Should work as you mentioned.

Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....
A few years back I loaded some 41 mag shot loads using 5 grs of universal a card wad #8 or #9 shot and a card wad to cover the shot. I sealed it with a drop or two
of white school glue. I never shot this load out of my 741 DW but out of a Taurus
5 shot revolver I carried fishing etc. ( I have a great dislike for snakes, having been
bitten by a copperhead as a young lad.) I carry the same model revolver but in 44
special so I make shot load with the Speer plastic capusles.
The 41 shot loads are close in power to the 44 special. Mag power is not for these
loads.
