I saw in an older post that Shoot slotted a shroud on a model 14 and others had thought of doing similar.  I would like to have 4 slots done on an 8 inch 744 shroud.  Is this a job for a gunsmith or a machine shop?  Any specs or dimensions that anyone can share?  Other experiences good or bad to guide me?  Thanks in advance.  GJ44

It is a relatively simple job, so the answer is... whoever is local to you and can handle the job ast the lowest cost to you.  The actual machining takes a few minutes--proper set-up is where the time is involved.  A VH shroud would be the easiest to do, since you could simply clamp it in the machinist vise and square it up.

You need to get someone you trust since there is no going back and fixing a botched job.

Thanks Shoot!  What type of machine am I looking for?  Anybody have a schematic of a slotted 8" barrel to help guide whomever I find locally to do this work?  Much appreciated.  GJ44

Any of us who has an 8 inch slotted barrel can give you dimensions. However, be aware that these are not straight-in cuts; they are tapered slightly at the ends.

PM Eric (EWK_Stuff).  I'm willing to bet that he can do it correctly.

Also, you can have Keith at DW do it.  I forget what he quoted me as additional on a new shroud, but I think it was in the $75-$85 range.

GoodLuck

Dan Wesson did mine for $75.  Sending it back to the factory is probably your best insurance to having it done to factory specs. although EWK can probably do it just as well.  The tapered ends are accomplished wtih a ball end mill.

Actually, the first couple years of Monson Model 40's were straight-in cuts...

Later, they went with the angled cuts on all moidels (which look better IMO).

Thanks CF.  Yet another DW anomaly.  I agree; I like the tapered cuts better.
