I can see that you are looking here

right now. Be patient, try warming the sideplate area, use some penetrating oil around the edges, etc. You are correct that prying is not a good idea. That sideplate has had maybe 30+ years to get crapped up, it will take a little time.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I had a heck of a time getting the side plate off my 715 when I first got it (I'm certain it had never been removed). This may sound silly, but I warmed it kind of toasty with a heat gun, not hot just toasty, then I stuck it in the freezer for about 15 minutes. Took it out and gave a good whack with a rubber covered screwdriver handle and it gave way.
It was still a bit of a tight fit. So, when I did my poor man's tuneup I lightly polished all of the mating surfaces. The polishing with a light film of EWL on the polished surfaces and it slips into and out of place perfectly.
To the paranoid people who check behind shower curtains for murderers:
if you find one...what's your plan?
