I'm doing some load work for my 6" 357 Mag, the cases on my "light " 357 loads are sticking in the cylinder. It takes a light tap on the ejection rod to get them out.

Win cases shot 2X, HS-6 (158's at 1,100fps & 140'S at 1,225 fps).

Is this normal?

The charges are up toward the upper limit and the Win Small Pistol primers are flattened. The velocities are well below published maximum.

Was this ever a problem with factory ammo?

Consider the possibility that your dies are producing a slightly different case that factory ammo (and I'm NO expert here, just spitballing!).

Make sure your chambers are spotlessly clean and smooth, you may have a slight carbon ring in the chambers, and your own ammo may be sized or trimmed to a different length.

Just a couple of non-expert guesses

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Look for a ring at the loading side of the chamber.  Use a hardened sharp tool and to feel for a ring.  Just a touch of a cone shaped stone in a Dremil tool will remove it, I had a .22 doing the same thing and that was the cure.

Another non-expert here.

1100 and 1200 are not super fast... but that does not mean pressures are not high. Try loading some more light to see what happens.

Do cases slid in neatly prior to firing? I had some re-loads with "buldging" case bottoms. I blamed the sizing die.

What are the cases like once you DO remove them? Splits? mouth cracks?

If the gun was mostly used for .38s prior to the .357 you are doing now, there may be scaring and buildup where the .38 case stopped but now the .357 case overlaps.

Soap Box, Ballot Box, Ammo Box

in that order.

I'm not sure what powder you're using, but I had a similar problem with jacketed 125 gr HP at 1100, it turned out to be the powder choice. I switched powders & the problem was completely solved. I was really surprised at the amount of change produced, the difference was night &day!

I also polished the chambers with green Scotchbrite pads in a cleaning rod tip, spun in an electric drill at low speed.

There is a thread lower down discussing in detail.

Factory loads 158 @ 1240 pop out pretty easy. The dies may not be squeezing the base of the case down enough, reloads go in just fine. My plinker loads - 158's at 900 - come out just fine.

I'll check the cylinder, the gun was NIB 200 rounds ago I have only shot 357 cases in the gun. For mag loads I have used 3N37 and HS-6 cause they work in my 10mm. Both will not produce mag velocitys even though the data says they will. The loads are obviously at full pressure. I'll have to go to a slower powder. Not the problem since I'm adding a "44" to the collection.

Any word on a good 445SM (downloaded to 44) and 357 mag powder?

Per the Hodgdon online reload data:

HS-6 for 158 LSWC is max @ 7.0

HS-6 for 158gr JHP is max @ 9.5  producing 41,900 cup

Looking here: http://www.reloadbench.com/burn.html

HS-6 is a semi-fast powder#41.  It produces high pressures.

3N37 by VV is #51 so still pretty fast.

I would try dropping back to a slower powder like 2400 ( 67), N110(68), or H110 (71). I also have those that use Blue Dot for the .44 ( # 60).

I myself am wanting to try Lil Gun ( #69) has it has very low pressures but I hope to be using it with 180gr hard cast bullets.

Lastly, I use TiteGroup which is a VERY fast powder (#12). It goes from medium pressure to high pressure very quickly, so I tend to load it on the low side.

Soap Box, Ballot Box, Ammo Box

in that order.

Yea, I was up there with HS-6. I'm looking at H110 as possible 357/ 44mag (on a 445 case) load. I hear W296 is not good to down load with, Is H110 more flexible?

My 158gr plated plinker load is Tightgroup @ 900 and their fine.

H110 makes good full power loads but it doesn't like to be reduced below about  15% of maximum or you are likely to get duds that leave the bullet stuck in the barrel.  They also need full crimps on the bullets to get the powder ignited good.  With the right load some of my 357 revolvers shoot their best groups with full power H110 behind 125 gr. bullets.  laugh

I get great consistency out of full loads of H110 as well, especially out of longer barrels.  2400 works for a great medium to high speed 158 gr load and Unique works for a good 125 gr plinking load for me.  I've tried tightgroup as well, works great, I just happen to have a bunch of Unique on hand.

My H110 loads chronographed.

I discovered that different sources gave very variable load data, but this was the load that worked in my 6" 15-2.
