I have a stuck barrel nut that I am trying to get off.  So far I have soaked it in penetrating oil, but it won't budge.  I am using the DW barrel wrench that came with the gun that looks like a large brass doorknob.  It is a VH6 460 Rowland, large frame.  What else can I do to get this nut off?

Thanks,

JRC

Oh man you're screwed, But you can sell it to me and I'll worry about it.lol2.

Seriously, keep soaking it and perhaps warm it up a bit with a heat gun or hair dryer and try it.  Send Eric at EWK a message and ask him for some advice, he has a tool for small frame Dans for just such a problem and may have one for large frames too.

+1 - I agree, you better send it to to me and I'll put it away so you don't have to deal with it.  No one likes .460's anyway!

Get a wrench from EWK, clamp it down like this, and crank it off.  You can put some heat to the outside of the shroud first to help it along.  It's worked for me every time.

Headsmaster turned me on to this. I thought it was fruitless but it worked. Heat the shroud with a hair dryer. Then put your gun muzzle down with the wrench on it on a carpeted floor. Hold the wrench with your bare feet to keep it from moving, push down and slowly turn the revolver. Make sure the wrench is firmly on the nut. It will take some effort. Your feet will start to hurt but its worth the pain if your nut was as stuck as mine when it breaks free. The nut had been firmly on my gun since it left the factory in the 80"s. It had never been removed.

Good Luck. p.s. " Again, make sure the wrench is firmly on the nut! "

And use the EWK wrench. There may some value in giving a couple of moderate, sharp taps on the wrench (straight back into the bore axis) just help break the adhesion in the threads from oil, dried up oil.

And did we mention  to use the EWK wrench? DW wrenches are crap in comparison.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

MMMKay, so I need the EWK wrench...good thing I ordered it on Tuesday.  As usual, Eric shipped it the same day, and I received it yesterday.  Will give it a shot this weekend.  Hope I don't have to resort to bare feet, but needs must...

I will let y'all know how it comes out, and try to get some pics too.
