Yes I read the "How to remove a stuck barrel and shroud" instructions on the right hand side of the forum.
I shot the 744 with 8 inch vented barrel for the first time. Thought I might try the 4 inch vented barrel but couldn't remove the nut. I'm strong, just don't want to bugger up the slots.
Thinking out loud I have some issues with the instructions. I really don't want to damage the Crown and Forcing Cone of the barrel. I was thinking of using some brass washers and/or brass spacers to protect the Crown and Forcing Cone. Keeping in mind, that Stainless Steel is actually softer then regular blued steel material. But in reality, I don't know what the barrel and barrel nut is made from. I'm being cautious. Also, I was thinking of putting electrical heat shrink on the threaded rod so as not to damage the rifling.
I was also thinking of having a tool made for the barrel nut that actually has a handle.
Do any of you have any suggests???

What kind of tool do you have? doorknob, plastic etc.
what I have done in the past with nuts that are stuck is, let them soak in some Kroil, then wipe off the excess. Place the tool on the nut and holding downward pressure, while trying to turn it off have someone hit the top of the tool with a hammer(dead blow works great). It acts like an impact and has worked even with nuts that are badly stripped. I am using steel homemade wrenches for this though so I'm not worried about damaging the finish of the tool or cracking it if it's plastic. hope this helps! You're ideas for protecting the barrel sound good to me if you decide to go that route. Most of the dan barrels I've worked with are high carbon steels not stainless, Dan just left'em in the white for the cool factor like on the 40's,or left them so they matched on stainless guns.

On the barrel wrench subject, you should get one of these awesome wrenches from forum member "EWK Stuff". These babies are absolutely fantastic!

On the stuck barrel problem…since it's a vented barrel, it probably has a bunch of gunk built up in there, if it hasn't been apart for a while. You'll want to soak it for a while, to try to help loosen things up before you start cranking that barrel out.
*EDIT* Woops, I'm a slow typer today. Superdan beat me to it. 😀
