I read all the parts are interchangeable in the DW revolvers except one. I assume that would be the hand. Correct?

Yes, the hand does usually require some fitting, so we seldom can just drop it in there.

I have had very good results in building several Dans from bare frames using used hands. Most are interchangable in my experience. Much easier to fitting a new unused hand. Lol.

There are more than one part in the small frame revolvers that are classified as a "timing" part, requiring a gunsmith to hand-fit during install and the factory will only ship these parts to a FFL. Off the top of my head; Bolt, Crane, Cylinder and Extractor.

The sideplate is probably the hardest part to get fit correctly on another frame.

Stinger is right. Side plates are hand fitted to every frame, so they take skill and luck to replace.

After re-reading the "two article" post on the Dan Wesson history forum I now see he stated "all parts inside of the frame" are interchangeable except one.

I have messed up several sideplate trying to fit them. I stopped buying bare frames unless the original sideplate is included. Not many on ebay since Toltec retired. If you do find one try to get one with the firing pin still in it and the sideplate included. If it is not included see if the seller still has it or has already put it up for sale on ebay. Sideplate are fitted before the frame is polished.

The factory is out of blued sideplates and they would be hell to fit a new one anyway. May have to do a reblue of the frame. I have a number of them but they are strictly for emergancies. I try each one and hope I can find one that is close enough to fit good enough. Bad odds.
