Hi.
OK, I was asked to take some pics of my 2 Dans as they get their facelifts. Here is the start of that.
Grips are underway, and I may have a question or two for LB about how close my 110° estimate is.
Eric @ ewkarms let me by a shroud blank from him, in the white, and the thing is massive!
I think that at 16" it weighs about 10 pounds. Even the six inch shroud weighs heavy in my pocket, all by itself, 2 lbs maybe?
So, the 6" is first, and maybe a 5, or 4 after that.
I will recap the pics from my introduce yourself post, and over time this will continue.

Here is a slice of the blank - a rough-cut 6" shroud.
Eric, it was very easy to cut, I think it was about 9 minutes with a hack saw, and came out pretty straight.
That makes the shroud less than 5.5" at this point, and it has at least a 1/16 extra, for 'facing' cuts.
The red sharpie is possible milling patterns, to bring the width of the shroud down to meet that of the frame. The blue is for ball mill hollowing, like you find on the forward edges of the frames.
Solid red is ejector rod mortise.
(I am unsure if I want the front to so closely mimic a 1911, that was unintentional, just thought it would aid holstering, and reduce wear.)
I'd love to hear thought, and ideas. Even more, now, rather than afterwards.
Thanks. - Steve

Thanks, Dave. I will.
I have some minimal access to a mill and a gunmakers lathe, I think. I may have to add some funky new equipment to my basement woodshop if I can't get timely progress.
(Anyone near Boston want to barter mill-time for homemade Belgian beer?)

Well ... I have drilled the alignment guide hole, and drilled, yes Drilled, the ejector rod mortise. Dont ask.
So, the shroud is now ON the barrel and frame.
(I got bored waiting for some mill time; in case you HAD asked ... )

The shroud is still .25" too long, so I will be able to clean up all the edges.
Lastly, I am trying to plan a cut order for the milling machine. 10 cuts or less is my goal. Hopefully repeatable.
Oh, and if you remember the grip prototype I had, it has been whittled down a little TOO far, black paint is gone, finger grooves are comfortable, and bondo should let me get dimensions right. Look/lines are not right yet, but hey, that is why the walnut is sitting patiently!

Dave in KS, I just got the barrel today, and I am excited. Thanks for the help, the trade, the info!
So I now have a 4" barrel IN HAND! and can mobilize on cutting a PAIR of shrouds from Eric's blank.
Even though the 6" shroud does not yet have the counterbore for the barrel nut, it feels comfortable, and with the larger of my 2 factory grips does not feel like it wants to nose dive. I am redrawing my fingergrooved grip to incorporate some of that geometry better, I sanded it down a little too far.
I love the EH shroud stock, go order some barrel assemblies from Eric! (I really think it should be called the FH shroud, 'cause that is how heavy it is! HA!)
More soon on the 4 inchers. And, when I have the first 3 shrouds roughed out, I am going to get militantly bothersome on borrowing some mill time 'round here!

The BAD news is that I have a 336 on its way to me. I wish it was was a '94 in .357 to go shootin' with my Dans, but since it isnt, I guess the good news is that I will eventually end up with one of those, too.
I will be torn beween carving new dan grips, and new 36 furniture

As a side note, I love the contrast of stainless and blued, between frame and cylinder - like you have SteveCT. And Dave the black shroud has me thinking, too - if I ever buy a new stainless cz dan I am going to have to get two - one to swap 2-tones with, and one to keep whole!

Dag durn it. I have nothing to report, other than I am still looking for milling machine access, near the New England Ptriots Stadium.... I do not want to continue chewing up the steel on my drill press. More soon, happy hunting!

Oh, things have come around! ( I have not mentioned the last several new aquisitions, mostly shotties, except for the pair of carbines - a 336, and a 9mm). My latest now has me the owner of a.semiauto 12ga. I am just all irritated that my access to proper machinery has not materialized yet.
On the bright side, I just got several tools and cutters from brownells, so i am ready for single and double spacing at 28 lpi.

Unusual, but not to bad. Slots in the butt to lower the Oak weight or ornament? Forearm looks really good to be Plywood.
