My 44 4 inch barrel has vents in the shroud, but no holes drilled in the barrel.  Is this normal???  Can I get holes drilled in the barrel to match the shroud?

Yes that is normal for the shroud to be ported, as they came with ported and non ported barrels. Both are available. I am sure a competent Smith can drill the holes, or even do it your self, but I wouldn't. I prefer to have both types of barrels. I usually shoot only nonported as I shoot mostly lead.

are you talking about the porting slots in the top of the shroud? If so, from what I've heard most of the Monson .44's came with the slots so you could put the ported barrel in them anytime. Also from what I've read they don't do as much for deadening recoil as most people would like, that's why they developed the comp system later, and the inside of the shroud gets packed full of gunk and can be a pain to get off unless you take it apart every time you use it for a thorough cleaning. The barrels are just a series of holes drilled around the barrel and the gas comes out of all them and finds it's way out. I have a 744 with the slots and was quite happy that it didn't have the ported barrel in it, because I shoot lead almost exclusively (hunting is the only occassional exception) and have heard that lead bullets only compund the issue.

P.S. the ported barrels do come up on gunbroker, you could buy one there to see if you like the system before you have holes drilled in your barrel and find out you don't care for it. just my 2 cents

I believe all the Monson .44 shrouds were vented (ported). The buyer then had the option of buying either a standard or ported barrel to their liking. The ported barrels are more problematic, because you need to take them apart & clean after each trip to the range...so a lot of folks decided to go with a standard barrel, making it less hassle.

I don't know if you can drill a barrel...I'll let someone else throw in their opinion on that.Big Grin

Thanks all for all the help.  Thinking about all the soot and stuff, I'm going to stay with non vented barrels as much as possible.

A 44 mag Dan Wesson doesn't recoil hard enough to need the ports, even with the 4" barrel.

I don't own a single ported barrel 🙂  better to spend my time shooting than cleaning...

I certainly want to get a 4" 44 mag barrel without ports.  I agree with Wayne as heavy has the DW's are the ports aren't needed.
