The blued model 14-2, and stainless model 714 Dan Wesson revolvers have a non adjustable (fixed) rear sight groove machined into the back of the pistol.
The model 14-2 (and 714) use a shorter front sight blade than the model 15-2 and 715's.
I've posted the picture below before, since it shows a few different front sights installed on my fixed/service sight model 714 Dan Wesson revolver.
Model 714 revolver with 3 different barrel assemblies, and front sights.
The top 6 inch barrel has an incorrect model 715 front sight installed.
(Which is too tall, and does not shoot to the correct POA/POI)
The middle (installed) 4 inch barrel shroud has an EWK arms model 14 conversion front sight installed, that allows you to use a Model 15-2 or 715 shroud on a model 14-2 or 714 revolver.
The bottom 2.5 inch shroud is the model 714 shroud that came with the pistol, with the factory correct height model 14-2/714 front sight installed.
EWK arms sells quite a few different front sight blades options for Dan Wesson revolvers, including adjustable partridge front sights, fiber optic front sights, and the model 14 conversion front sights, which are nice if you want to use a model 15-2 barrel shroud on a 14-2

Hope that helps clear up some of the confusion.

I have the original front sight on my 14-2, but its no longer blue as someone scrubbed it to get some rust off (unsuccessfully). I'd love a colored front sight in the original shape/style, but what I am hearing suggests I should just keep it as is for now, and maybe re-blue it in the future when the whole gun needs some substantial service. Is this correct?
I didn't know much about DW revolvers but it seemed high quality in the hand and the seller accepted my lowball offer immediately. I know the 14-2 is the more homely of the small frame 357s.
Reblue in the future is good. Because of the different manufacturing process of the frame, shroud, sideplate and the front sights there is often a different hue on each part. You can get all but the frame reblued and it is not a big deal if it doesn't match. The frame is investment cast and often turns a purplish hue we call Barney after the cartoon dinosaur. The front sight is MIM I believe and the shroud and sideplate I think are rolled steel. EWK can reblue all but the frame very reasonably.

I think it will be pretty challenging to get a correct height 14-2 front sight with the 15-2 style colored insert. At one time Dan Wesson in Norwich NY sold the interchangeable front sight blades in a variety of styles and heights. Maybe give them a call 607.336.1174?
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
