I just got my first DW and have a question about the way one of the grips in the pac fit.
When I first put these grips on they wouldn't get tight on the gun and after looking in the square hole I noticed wood shavings on the side of the hole in the bottom. After removing the shavings the grip is now tight on the frame, but has a gap, is this normal?
I can see pressure marks in the top of the grip from the frame, so there isn't any more that it can "suck up."
The gap is in the back and to the right side as seen in the picture, the left side of the grip fits to the frame as I'd expect it to.
Don't know much history on the gun except that I'm the second owner, original bill of sale from 1981 was included, and judging by the lack of wear and marks on it, it hasn't been shot a whole lot.
Thanks,
Ken

I had that same grip and judging by the rounded edges at the back, the previous owner did some grinding on it, hence the wood shavings. All my grips had sharp crisp corners where it contacted the frame. Replacement grips that have a tight and smooth transition can be found on the various auction sites including Ebay. I have used epoxie putty to fill gaps on Contender grips that fit something like yours; put the putty around the inside of the gap areas and wax or spray mold release on your gun's contact areas and tighten down for the drying time, a little color mismatch, but a tight fit, that won't accumulate grime.

I've got a couple grips that leave gaps in different spots, too. It makes me think that some of the grip making jigs weren't always "square", or someone was just in a hurry some days.
The grip in the top center of this pic leaves a gap at the back like yours, but fits very snug on the sides. The one directly below it, leaves a gap behind the trigger guard, that others don't.

Let's see... grip #1 fits great, grip #2 is tight...
I have that same grip, and it fits the same way. Many of the DW grips do not fit properly on some guns. I do a fair amount of swapping to find the right grip for the right frame. You would think they would all be the same, but they are not even close. And from what I can tell, Palmer guns have a larger tang.

Wow Shoot, that's a very nice collection of grips there. That picture made me forget about my question, I'm too easy...
Speaking of which, the very bottom left set, what kind of wood?
The Hogues are already on the way.
Thanks for the responses.
Ken
If you bough the Hogues from Hogue, they may take 3 months to receive. I ordered three from Hogue and it took 3 months.
Happyness is a Hot DW and a pile of used brass!!! Rich
