I feel your pain. That is the correct nut for the left side of the sight. That nut acts as a retainer for the allen head screw that you can see on the right side of the sight. The nut is "permanently" affixed to the end of the screw at the factory. I'm not sure how this is accomplished but I think they crimp or peen it some how. The allen screw thread through the notched part of the rear sight and as the screw is turned the notched part moves left or right. The nut shown in the photo is similar in design to the barrel nut. It is a royal pain to get it off. I have done this and it is not fun.
My guess is that the adjusting screw with the allen head is screwed into the nut until the end of the screw comes through the nut and then the end of the screw is peened over with a punch so that the nut will not come off.
If you remove the nut you will probably have to replace the screw and the nut with new parts. There are a couple other parts inside the sight that should probably also be replaced if you are going down that road.

Yes, replace the rear sight. Find them on eBay, or try Dan Wesson. I don't know if the new 715 sights fit. If all else fails, PM me and I will check my personal stash. Millett made one that is actually a step up in quality too. They cost about twice what a factory sight costs. Prices on eBay are very high now. I don't know if folks actually buy things at those prices. Snake-eye may have some replacement parts but it is very difficult to rebuild them.
