Yesterday I saw a 15-2 VH8 at the local gun store. I had never seen one in there before and I was succumbing to a bad case of the because I want a 15-2. When the salesman pulled it out of the case he looked at me and said, "we got it marked cheap 'cause the barrel's wiggly." I sez, "Really?" I proceeded to handle it, poked my fingernail into the slot on the barrel nut and twisted the nut off. Yep, it was wiggly! Besides not having the barrel nut tight, the roll pin that lines up the shroud had a little play. But these guys had this gun priced for $329. . It was a 193xxx serial # from Monson. Yay!
That sounded like a deal (I knew they would come down at least 10%) until I started giving it a once over. The front end of the barrel shroud on both sides looked like somebody dragged it down the sidewalk. On the left side of the frame under the cylinder at both ends, the frame was gouged down to bare metal with base metal reduction like a metal-eating beaver got ahold of it. The metal reduction at the muzzle and under the cylinder was not normal wear and tear. The entire frame had scratches into the blueing, and the cylinder had about 3mm of side-to-side play in it. Other than the play in the cylinder it seemed okay mechanically. Timing was good, trigger and hammer were good, barrel wasn't pitted, grip was in good shape. The price was for the pistol only, no extras.
I asked them what their bottom dollar was, and salesguy went to confer with his manager. They came back with $300. I told them that I would have to see about it. My dearly beloved was a leetle upset about my last purchase. Honestly though I got scared thinking about what had happened to cause that cosmetic damage to the frame and not wanting to waste my hard-earned dough on something that may be scrap metal.
Question is, did I do the right thing by walking away? Since I just got into the Dan game I don't know how often Dan's pop up. Is the cosmetic damage to the frame worth overlooking?

I'm new at the DW game also but have bought 6 Dans since the first of the year. I camp out on Gun Brokers, GunsAmarica, Ebang, Auction Arms, and a few others. There are a lot of Dans for sale but maybe not in your area. If you buy online you take somewhat of a chance but I have pretty much gotten what I expected. My advice is put a little more money in a gun in better condition unless you can repair and refinish guns.
I'm a 14-2 and a pork chop accumulator but I probably have an average investment of around $400 per gun.

I think you were correct in passing on this one. You should be able to find a 95%+ Model 15-2 for $400 or slightly less.
