Unless there is documentation beyond word of mouth I remain skeptical.

I think the most plausible explanation is that the revolver was originally purchased as a .357 Mag.

Somewhere along the line a .38 marked shroud was put into service.  Possibly shroud and barrel were installed together  to get a different barrel length from what originally came on the revolver.  My theory has nothing to do with being knowledgable about Dan Wessons.

It is based more on marketing practices and also the liability issues.  All sorts f combinations are possible with the Pork Chop models. Until  recently I was using a Dan Wesson shroud on a High Standard.  The modularity of the revolvers open the door for all sorts of shenanigans once the revolver leaves the factory.
