Hi Guys,
I'm brand new to this forum and will welcome any help. I'm considering a 357 supermag/maximum, but have some questions you may be able to help with.
Ive owned a 44 and a 357 in the past, traded them for I can't remember..
Is the overall size of the supermags the same, ie. 357 same frame size and cylinder size as the 445?
If you had to chose between a 357 and a 445, which would you choose?
Thanks, Craig
Hey Craig,
Welcome to the forum. Let me first say that I'm not an expert on the SuperMags but hopefully what I have read in the past will be correct.
If I'm not mistaken if you get a 357 Supermag / Maximum you will have to reload for it since factory ammo is not available (at least I thought it wasn't). In looking on Midwayusa.com looks like Grizzly is loading up some now.
As for frame size I believe it is the same size as the 445 but not sure. Someone else here should be able to tell you for sure.

I tend to agree with Jody, either of the Supermags MOST of the guys who shoot them are "reloaders" ,yes, they do what they claim to and they love 'em, but me, I'm a bit more 'practical' and would stay with that which is readliy available, beside you can find them more often and they are more affordably priced....like my neighbor has a new in the box, 744VH10 ( stainless 44 mag 10-inch heavy vent barrel) and he only wants $550 for it, seems fair to me....may have to check a bit more into that myself, but I'm not really looking, happy with my 15-VH6.......................

Howdy
I heard you could shoot regular .357 cartridges in the Max and I guess you could also shoot .38 special.
Don't see why not, as I think the chambers are simply longer than the .357. But then again....I have never set eyes on one. Kinda would like one, tho......just for the fun of it.
My 15-2V8 is running good.
Take care

Hey, and thanks, I was away yesterday and just checked in this am. Ya know Pete I've been wondering about using 38's and 357's in a supermag, supposedly you can do it, but I wonder if it would "crud up" the cylinder, because the chamber is longer on the supermag. I've tried 38's in 357's and 44 specials in 44 mag, with no apparent problem that I can see, but I'm always a little worried that It would cause some problems.
Thanks Jody I've been looking at that one, we'll see where it goes. By the way this is a really nice uncluttered, organized site, it has a really good look to it.
Thanks

(1) Loaded ammo for the .357 Maximum is available at http://www.reedsammo.com in bullet weights from 140gr to over 200gr.
(2) The only difference between the .357 SuperMag and the .445 SuperMag, other than the chambering, is the barrel threading in the frame. Otherwise they are identical.
(3) Although .38 Special and .357 Magnum ammo can be used in the M40, I do not recommend it because it can cause chamber fouling that can lead to hard extraction with the Maximum case and the bullet jump to the chamber throat is detrimental to accuray and can also result in bullet shaving.
