The 357SM shoots the same bullet as the 357 Mag except I believe the lightest weight should be 158 grain bullet. You can shoot 357 Mag ammo in the SM but you'll get cylinder crud build-up ahead of the case then the SM ammo will be hard to load / extract after some time using only Mag ammo. jagg called it.
The issue will be more pronounced w/ lead bullets because of obturation. As the lead bullet exits the case it will expand to seal gases before it reaches the throat, shaving off some lead in the cylinder. If you shoot .357 in the SM, I'd stick to jacketed bullets.

Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....
I agree you can even shoot 38 spcl. but cleaning is a must. I've loaded all three with 357 mag dies so you don't have to buy 357 super mag dies or maximum dies for reloading. I like the 357sm in the hand gun because it shoots so flat and has what I feel is minamal recoil, even with the 180 grain hornady hpxtp and IMR 4227 at 23.5 grains. remember to always work up your loads your self because there are to many variables. Good luck! pops

I have never had problems shooting .38 and switching to .357. I reload 10 to 1 in favor of the .38 HBWCs. I will run hundreds threw a gun then switch to .357 and never have any problems. On a average weekend I will put 300 to 400 rounds down range and it is not an issue for me.
