My hunch is that the 414 trounces the 41 magnum as far as long range hit probability. I suspect even the heavily loaded 41 magnums don't approach the performance levels of conventionally loaded 414s carrying the same bullet. Aside from the "flame" factor emanating from the barrel, are there any noticeable differences in hitting the target? Quite frankly, I'd like to justify just being satisfied with my 41's, go home, call it a day, and dismissing those 414 SM's are just simple unobtanium, never to be gotten, never to be had . But I suspect the responses would only kindle my interesting for this round. Oh the pain! DW41F.

Ahh you know you want one, the mother of all 41's . Now all you have
to do is struggle through the thought of letting go of all the green it will
take to get one. It's only money, I think I heard the other day they were
printing another 60 billion , on the other hand no 414's have been made
in awhile.
FYI : forum member IHMSA80x80 had his up for sale a few months back.
Don't know if he still has it or if it is even for sale anymore.

I don't have a 41 or 414, but I do have the 357mag and Max and the performance shows up at the 100 and 200yd ranges. To shoot the mag at 200yds with an 8" barrel requires holding over the 18" gong completely, for the Max it only requires aiming a little above center and ringing it all day long, or til out of ammo.

Greetings
Coooorect on the unavailable 414 SM. But you can make one.
4 years ago I set about to do so. Got a 414 SM cylinder from DW and installed it on my 375 SM. Then got a custom fit caliber.410 barrel made for my 375SM frame. So I have a switch caliber SM Revolver .
You can do the same with a 357SM. But I think there may be no more 414 cylinders left. So why not rechamber the 357 and get the barrel rebored to caliber.410. Would still end up alot less than a collectors item.
I will do more load development with my 414 SM when we get back up north there next year. I also have an 8" 41 mag DW (1981 vintage). Shooting a 265 grain GC the 414 SM 8" will produce 300+ fps more than the 41 mag can. Plus you can get enough 1680 into a 414 case to really get the heavy 41 bullets moving along with very reasonable pressure.

Mike,
I did purchase a 414 cylinder from CZ a year ago or so. Maybe I got one of the last ones?

My .414 DW gets about 1600 fps. Does it make hitting long-range targets easier? Nope. Accuracy, not velocity makes long-range hits more probably. The velocity difference only requires different sight settings, and that requires testing. Once I am dialed in on the targets, I can get just as many with the .414 as I get with my .41 Magnums. I am talking handgun silhouette targets out to 200 meters.
Recoil and blast are more noticeable, so you won't get as tired shooting the shorter .41 Mag, and it is cheaper to reload for. However, the SuperMag version is a lot more fun to shoot.
