There was never a .41 special like the .38 and .44, in terms of a shorter cartridge that was later extended to be a magnum. .41 mag was born as a full size cartridge intended for police use.
A while back Starline made some .41 special brass with a .41 special headstamp. It was basically .41 mag cut back to .38/.44 spc length.
The idea was that some indoor ranges banned "Magnum" ammunition, so .41 "Special" brass would be usefull, also for some cowboy action games where folks wanted to shoot their .41 mag Blackhawks but the rules limit you to low velocity rounds.
Someone (possibly starline again) also made some standard .41 Mag brass that was headstamped ".41 Police" or somthing like that so it wouldn't have the dreaded "Magnum" word on it.
Story time: way back when the San Antonio Police almost bought .41 magnum (Smith model 57) revolvers. The only requirement was that the revolvers say ".41 Police" on the rollmark instead of ".41 Magnum". This was in the 70's and "magnums" were a sensitive issue.
Smith got stupid, and asked for an extra $50 for the custom roll-mark. Seriously If I'm running a company and you want to buy 500 guns I'll make them say whatever you want free of charge, especially if I'm trying to roll out a new model. Rummor has it some buerecrat lined out the extra-charge as unjustified, and so Austin never gt ther .41s.

I have a difficult time understanding some of S&W's business practices. Here is a link to an article by John Taffin titled The Wildcat .41 Special.
The .41 Special is to the .357 Mag what the .38 Special is.
It is just a cut down .41 mag case basically, it allows for reduced loads without the volume of the .41 Mag case. Lots of folks have had a hard time getting the accuracy with reduced loads in the .41 Mag case, so the .41 Special came about. Our brass is from Starline, a long ago run that they made special. It is properly headstamped and is what we use in our .41SPL ammo.
Yes, they will chamber and fire 100% in any .41 Mag gun.

Okay, now I have to tell on myself a bit here.
So, when I started this business, I was only loading for the various calibers I owned, with the thought of, what won't sell I can just shoot. Now keep in mind we started with a lot of oddball and obsolete calibers. Well, that of course sent me in search of guns in new calibers to justify adding calibers and to use for testing. Which of course turned into buying guns I wanted, with the excuse that, I'll load for them too. Then came the T/C....if you know anything about them, they are available in every caliber you know and more that you don't know. The good part was, the barrels for the T/C were cheaper than a whole new gun. Unfortunately I still tend to buy guns just to test ammo in, the good news is the business can take it so while they are not really "mine" they are mine.
Buying ammo just to look at it, yeah, I admit it, I too have that addiction. I just cannot help myself sometimes.
Check out my post in the general forum on "Name that Caliber".
