I just picked up a virtually new DW from a friend of a friend. It sat in a closet for a long time and has only been fired a few dozen times. I don't have a photobucket account so sorry no pictures yet. I didn't get any accessories like the wrench or any extra barrels. It has a six inch barrel, blued with adjustable sights and a smooth grip without any checkering. The bluing is absolutely perfect and there are no marks or scratches anywhere. The gun was made in Monson Ma. and the serial number is 44B0018xx. I scoured the net trying to determine the year it was made without success. It really doesn't matter but I was just curious what the year of manufacture was and I figured this would be the place to ask. I have also been trying to find a good crossdraw holster for it and the only thing I can locate is a Galco for a Redhawk. Does anyone know for sure if it will fit? I had to fork over three hundred for it and after looking around that seems to be a decent price. After it cools off a little this evening I am going to put a few rounds through it to see how accurate it is, and I will post up the results. Thank you in advance for any answers on the holster issue and if you have any other suggestions fire away.

Welcome to the .
I have a Bianchi Hip Holster for my 44 4" which I love, and on which I am basing my guess that you make like the following cross-draw:

It is for a 9-10" Wesson, but I don't think it would necessarily hurt to have an extra 3 or 4" available for if you get another barrel later. Though if you know you are not going to get a longer barrel, it may really be a pain. Look at the bottom of the list, Wesson means Dan Wesson on Bianchi's site.
I got the #22400 and it was a perfect fit (and a LOT less than $300).....

Thanks for the warm replies. As I look around on different sites I am realizing that I really scored. I ordered a wrench from EWK this afternoon so I have it on hand in case I ever need it. I am going Elk hunting this fall in Colorado and was planning to take the DW with me, that is why I want to find a good quality cross draw holster for it. It probably won't happen but I sure would like to take an Elk with it.

At a guess, I'd say that was made 1982-1983, however the 44 S/N's we have are a little "funky". The Large Frame (.44 Mag and up) were introduced in late 1980.
You did REAL GOOD!
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Man, that is one killer story. Way to go, congrats!
As Steve said, the 44 s/n's aren't quite as easy thus far to determine the manufacture date. The 44's started out with just numbers, no letters, then came (1 or 2) letters/number, then came the caliber/letter/number style like you have there. It's hard to say exactly when these changes happened, but Steve is doing a great job of trying to get to the bottom of it all, with the DWF s/n Registry.
