Hello all. I recently purchased a Dan Wesson 8" 44 mag revolver (I believe it is a large frame) at an auction. The gun is in great shape, but the hammer won't stay back. Everything works fine when I simply squeeze the trigger, but when I pull the hammer it won't lock into place. Could it be that the trigger-stop screw is too far out? Or is this pistol made that way, and I'm just an idiot? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Back the grip screw out a quarter turn at a time till the hammer catches the full cock notch. Then go an 1/8 turn more. If the grip screw is too far in it will interfere with the main spring strut not allowing the hammer to come all the way back for single action but double action works fine.

Sounds like a job for the home tinkerer! Take it apart, clean it, and reassembe. Sounds like an internal spring or other issue. This is the best how-to thread on the internet: https://www.danwessonforum.com/forum/reloading/large-frame-disassembly-tutorial-pics/
And, as always, you have a ton of folks ready to help you out!

Ron
