I think it would make a terrible mess, and no tellin what all might happen to the shroud.

Will a ported barrel work in a non-ported shroud? Thanks.
It will "work", marginally and briefly, but that would be an even bigger mistake than the original DW "Power Control" system.
Don't do it!

The original question was ported barrel, non ported shroud.
Answer: Eventual Epic Fail, unless you are a fanatic barrel and shroud scrubber

zoommb: There is a 44 Mag pistol pack (looks "un-factory" issued) on GB with 6" and 8" ported/unported barrels. The shrouds that come with the pack do not look ported.
Hi sbfan..
I only saw one .44 mag PP on GB and it clearly has ported shrouds. Look really carefully about 1/4 inch back from the front of the front vent and you will see a dark spot. It's more visible on the VH6 than the VH8, but it's there on both.

Steve -- My point was that it is not possible to shoot a ported barrel in and un-ported shroud since all 4, 6, and 8 inch shrouds for the 44 mag were ported and there were any ported barrels for the 10-inch un-ported shroud. You can't shoot a combination that is not available. The only exception would be a custom 4, 6, or 8 inch shroud with no ports (I think Eric makes them).

I'm the first person to admit that any DW larger that .357 mag is not in my "zone", maybe I should not post in on these topics.
My understanding of the OP was ported barrel, unported shroud.
My experience is so limited that I do not know if there are unported shrouds.
I very willingly defer to the knowledge of Members with much more knowledge than I, and the group with "more knowledge than I" which is, well, almost everyone
By now, you'd think I would know when to just be silent. Unfortunately, I'm just not very smart.

We don't want you to be silent...Everyone here matters...and I'm still pretty much a newb. Would sure love to be in the position to own, oh I don't know, 5 or 6 large frame Dan's. My 44 is a Smitty, way more difficult me thinks..

Well I hate to dip in, but an honest question. Do the Norwich shrouds come ported? They may I just don't know.
LB
A recently ordered 6 inch 445 Supermag Norwich shroud for a 7445 (ordered from CZ UZA) arrived with out shroud port holes.
I was under the impression that the 445 Supermag barrel shrouds will also fit on the 44 Magnum, but the 445 shroud has a somewhat longer relief cut for the ejector rod.
Maybe I have that backwards?
I don't know that much about the large frame Dan's either. Only the little tid-bits that I have picked up here on the Dan Wesson forum.

I have a Palmer 44 with 3 shrouds and a Norwich 44. None of the shrouds are ported. I believe that only Monson 44 shrouds are ported except 10" ones and that Dan Wesson gave up on the whole porting idea by the Palmer years.
I have shot a ported barrel in a nonported shroud a couple shots. It works but I very much do not recommend it. Eventually the ports will accumulate crud and make it difficult to remove the barrel from the shroud, same as if both were ported. Store away the ported barrels and buy EWK barrels to shoot.

zoommb: If you're referring to the blue finish set, guess my old eyes aren't picking up the ports in the shrouds from the pictures that are posted. But the seller said they are ported. GB listing #446589720 is for a stainless set, although it's not tagged as a PP. Again, I don't see the shroud ports, but the seller said they're there. Just wanted to make sure in case someone was trying to sell a combination that would be unsafe.
Thanks for all the replies.
