I just purchased a 4" fixed barrel, Dan Wesson Firearms, Palmer, Massachusetts, 44S0039xx, only other marking is on barrel ".44 Magnum Ctg.". I have not taken the grips off.
The extractor star has some damage, it seems to cycle ok, but I have not shot it. Will the extractor for other Dan Wesson .44, or other make, fit this model?
Any idea, based on serial number, when it was manufactured? The machining in the recoil shield is rougher that Smiths I have handled, there is evidence of the milling tool marks.
The muzzle is not like anything I have seen before in my limited experience. There is a heavy full lug shroud around the barrel that matches the frame, and the barrel itself seems of a different metal, with a wall thickness of about 1/8", and sticks out from the shroud about 1/16 of an inch. The muzzle end of the shroud is like 320 grit wet sandpaper, dull and grainy compared to the polished sides of the shroud. The portion of the barrel that sticks out is shiny, and has no crown.
So, can I use any .44 DW extractor? Is there a process of micro welding to repair a damaged star? Are there gunsmiths that specialize in DW?
Is the barrel 2 pieces? It has been shot a bit, but I am sure it is still more accurate than I. I will try to get pictures soon. Thanks in advance, Skip, Daytona Beach

Nice score on an uncommon Dan. Dan Wesson in Norwich has the ejector star, but it will need to be fitted by a smith. Probably should do the hand at the same time. DW factory would be who I'd have do the work. Fill out the service form on their site and go from there. The barrel is two pieces but you will damage it if you try remove it. Best not to mess with it, factory job. Besides, the fixed barrels are way more rare than regular 44 mags.

If a man designed it, and a man built it, then a man can fix it.
