I have come across a Wesson 357 with a six inch compensated barrel. I believe it's a 715. The front sight is broken. In looking for a new one does it make a difference if the insert is white, yellow, or red? Do the colors mean anything? I've only seen red on pictured wesson's but white and yellow for sale.

EWK (Sponsor to the right) sells hi-visibility front sights that I have on my hunting pistols. With my older eyes, they're well worth the money. There is no difference in the OEMs- only personal preference.
Oh- I almost forgot:

There are front sights in red (the most common), yellow, white, blued, and Patridge blades, as well as more recent fiber optic. There is no real difference except to be aware that there ARE different height front interchangeable sights, in various colors.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Thanks to all. Now I have more infor to digest. I contacted EWK and they don't have any with inserts, all metal only. I think keeping with OEM style would help keep the value. But fiber optics sounds more shootable to these old eyes. For red being the most common I don't see any available. I'll keep looking. As for height I'm at a loss. Any suggestions there. What might this be worth if known. I see one on GunBroker that starts at 1000 but no bids and a buy it now at 1700. This is my first DW. Thanks again.

I believe it's a fixed barrel and adding a picture would have to done by someone who know's now. Like maybe my grandchildren. It has a threaded piece on the front that I guess is to gain access for cleaning. There isn't any spanner lugs to remove the barrel. It has a Hogue grip. Any shared knowledge of this would be welcomed. Would a high vis. front sight detract from it's value?

The reason I asked is because the fixed barrel model has the front sight in front of the ports and is changeable easily with the set screw. The removable barrel model is a little more difficult to change because the front sight is behind the ports and is not secured by a set screw - it is pinned in place. You would have to drive out the 1/16" pin with a roll pin punch, insert a new sight and mark the exact spot to drill a hole in the new sight. You would need to drill it with a drill press to insure squareness and exact location, then pin it back in the shroud. It's not difficult to do, you will just need access to the right tools or someone that can drill the sight for you.
Anyway, if you have the fixed barrel model, just pick up a couple colored insert sight to keep it original and a Hi Vis sight to shoot if that is what you like. You can change them out in less than 10 seconds. Someone here may have a colored sight they will sell you - there was a member a while back that had a bunch of them - I'll see if I can find the thread.
