OK, so I got the new Houge grips in my 715 today and headed for the range. As is usual, after about 60 rounds of PMR .38 special ammo, the DA trigger gets sticky and inconsistent. I keep shooting until it does what I've been trying to capture; the trigger is stuck hard, will not pull.
I get the range officer to come check it out, he confirms and goes to get the gunsmith who happened to be at lunch. The RO plays with the cylinder which appears to be in a position between chambers, once rotated the gun shoots the round DA.
The RO tries a SA shot next and the gun will not hold cocked. We shot a few more rounds DA and still, it will not cock for SA. We quit for not knowing if the gun is safe to shoot.
Any ideas what I'm dealing with here? Thanks

The key is the grip screw. I assume since you "just got the Hogue grips", they're a recent addition. Back off on the screw a turn or two and everything should be fine. You may need to get a shorter screw if the grips feel loose.
Hope that helps,
Ron

Sounds to me like powder/crud build up. Mine will do this ( but not generally in 60 rounds). I would bet your cylinder in this condition will not spin freely.
remove the BA and clean:
the top strap, paying attention to the crud build up there
cylinder face
crane where the cylider rides ( oil this, it should spin freely)
barrel face that meets with the cylinder
This condition is most prevalent when using a fast powder ( TiteGroup) with all cast lead bullet. The fast burning powder is affecting the rear of the bullet causing smoke and carbon/lead build up on the cylider face and between the cylinder and the crane. I also have this worse when the old loads I had done for me were too hot ( 3.8gr TiteGroup). It is much less when dropping that to 3.4gr.
To verify this try using a jacketed bullet, and see if the issue just goes away.
I still shoot all lead bullets but I am weaning myself away from fast powders like Titegroup, which I dont need in a 6" barrel anyway. My next powder will be HP38.
Soap Box, Ballot Box, Ammo Box
in that order.

Yes PMC, sorry, fingers moving faster than brain.
Also, I just double checked my range bag and realize now that I had fired 50 rounds of the PMC ammo then switched to Remington UMC 130 gr nickel plated cases with FMJ lead. There are 21 bullets used in the Rem box so the total round count was 71. Now that I reflect on this, the trigger became gummy when I started using the Rem box. Whether that was coincidental or not, I can't say. I don't want to blame the ammo in this case because this has happened before, always with "factory" reloaded ammo.

Yup, the screw is the problem. I'll pickup some washers today and shim it. Tried loosening the screw but it has to come out too far to be clear of the mechanism and still hold the grip firmly.

Finding washers for this Hogue grip is not an easy thing. The machine screw furnished with grip has a very small shoulder, I'm uncertain as to Hogue's reasoning behind this. Nonetheless, I bought a handful of #8-32 lock washers and nipped them, then squeezed them onto the screw such that they reduced the effective length of the threaded shaft without changing the diameter of the shoulder. The result is a perfectly tightened, unmolested grip.
Here's a picture of my 715 with it's drawer mates, a sultry crowd if there ever was one.

Ah yes, that Anaconda. I traded a Smith 625-3 (.45 ACP) revolver straight across for it; one of the most painful trades I've ever done, no regrets now though.
I'm really enjoying my DW 715 now, one of my favorite games is to stick little red dots all around the target and see how few rounds I can use to make them go away. Sometimes I end up laughing to myself, the gun is so darn accurate.
