A few months back my search for a S&W 625 (45 colt) revolver ended with the purchase of a DW 744 with 8" barrel, red dot and BSA mount for $680 (after some good advice and afermations from this board). I love the 744 and have absolutely no regrets purchasing it instead of the S&W 625 I was looking for.
A local add just appeared for a 715 with an 8" barrel for $700, no other accessories included. How much difference is there in a 744 and 715 size and weight wise? Is the 715 with the same 8" full lug barrel much smaller and lighter than a 744 with a simular 8" full lug barrel?
I believe the 715 has a side plate while the 744 guts come out the bottom of the gun with no side plate. As tempting as a Monsoon 357 for $700 is I am really trying to talk myself into passing on the deal. I don't have any other 357's, I don't load for 357 and I don't really want to invest in a Dillon conversion kit to load 357. I am kind of thinking I would rather have a smaller and lighter S&W 986 (7 shot 9mm) revolver as I already load 9mm by the thousands and the 986 would be a bigger contrast from the 744 making it less repetative and more unique and fun to shoot.

What a sweet dilemma uh? $700 is not a bad price if it's pristine. I like them all, so my advice is to buy. The fact that l can take any of my DWs fully apart and replace drop in parts or quickly switch barrels for different feels without a gunsmith are priceless features. Have fun with your new 744. a great deal for $680! A little jealous...

The 715 is a small frame model and the 744 is a large frame, so yes, there are both size and weight differences with the large being larger and heavier. Since perception is relative to the shooter, someone who has access to both configurations would have to weigh and measure them to determine what they actually are.
Anybody ?

I just weighed my Monson 6" 715 VH at 2lbs 11.5 oz
My Palmer 744 6" VH with non-fluted cylinder (heavier than fluted of course) weighs 3lbs 8.5oz

Thank you for all the replies, especially taking the time to weight your 715 and 744!
I agree the ability to quickly change barrels is priceless. My 744 is a very nice revolver but an 8" 44 mag doesn't have much use to me, it is way too front heavy. I purchased a 4" barrel from CZ and wrench and brake from EWK. It makes for such a flexible system that I can easily reconfigure at the range. The 8" barrel with the red dot at 100 yards IS a lot of fun but for general shooting steel targets 20 yards away the 4" with wimpy loads is much more practical. The ability to quickly add the EWK brake to either barrel is a big bonus!
I have never held a 715 or even seen one in person. I had never held or seen a 744 in person before I made the 9 hours round trip to purchase the 744 but remembered reading about them when they were originally produced. The 744 was bigger and heavier than I expected... but I have come to appreciate the heaft and pure ruggedness! Of course the SA trigger pull is what really sold me, it is really close to my best worked over 1911 which I have been shooting for 25+years (I am a semi auto guy just recently widening my horizions into revolvers).
The 715 has been listed for abit over a week now and the seller does list OBO. So I think I will offer $650 and see where it goes. The 715 will be a 6 hour round trip... but worth it.
Thanks again for all the replies!

I don't know how to tell you this Andrew, so I'll just say it ... you're 2" short !
Haha yep. I have a custom 10" 44 mag assembly with scope mount and Bushnell scope, and without the scope mounted, I don’t find the 10" too muzzle heavy. But it’s personal preference I guess.
