I have a Model 7460. Also have a nice supply of Winchester Partition Gold ammo in 45 Win. Mag. I also have some moon clips from TK Custom. My problem is this, as many of you probably already know, the moon clips will work just fine on Star Line brass, but will not work on the Winchester Brass/Ammo. Does anyone on this board have any firsthand experience or knowledge of how I can alter these moon clips to work on the Winchester Brass, or possibly some other solution that will allow me to safely use this ammo in this weapon??? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Moon clips are a loading/unloading aid. The extractor star will not push the cases out without the moon clip. You can fire the ammo but you will have to either grab each case rim to remove it or use something to push the cases out from the front of the cylinder.
The case is head spaced off of the mouth.
Are your moon clips too thick for the win brass?

I thought that the moon clips provide the correct head spacing for the win mag ammo in the Dan Wesson 460. Learn something new everyday.
Ward, I thought others had this problem, and the opened up the moon clips by filling away some of the opening, but wait for others to chime in here, I could be wrong.

Being as I don't own a DW 460 I guess I could be wrong. I based my answer off of the other Wesson I own. 625 smitty. I reload 45 auto rim cases to get around the use of moon clips and there is a rim for the extractor to push these out.
To test your DW 460 just drop a round in the cylinder without a moon clip. If it falls through then you need the moon clip.
I have to believe that DW would have engineered the cylinder to head space the round off of the mouth as the case is intended to be.

Thanks very much to one and all for your replies. As always, this forum is first class and a treasure chest of information. I will try the file trick and see how it comes out. Willy, did you file the inside of the hole to make it larger, or did you just file a bevel on the two "points" at the opening to make the opening larger? Do you think a Dremel tool would be too aggressive?
Thanks again to everyone,
Ward
