Have a decent 744 with 6" barrel. Looking at options for 8" barrel & shroud.
EWK seems to only have blued barrels. 8" $199
CZ-Dan Wesson sells 8" stainless for $374.
Originals only come up on auction sites every once on a blue moon and seem to go for silly prices.
So, are the new CZ components the same quality as EWK and/old stock? I think the markings are laser engraved instead of roll marked.
This is revolver isn't top collector quality so I'm tempted to go "cheap" and get a blued 8" barrel for shooting purposes. However, it sure would be nice to have two original DW barrels with the gun. What do you all think?

You'll be much happier to have the barrel to match your gun. If the frame is Monson you want the roll mark BA's. I've been seeing several BA's on e-bay and gunbrokers site as well. Most are not cheap...even the blued ones can go high..go for the stainless, you be glad in the end..

It's a Monson made BA and it's a VH10. You can always get a couple hundred for the scope and mount. The price is right too.
only a few hours left.

Cecil - I think you're right. Monson 744 needs Monson barrel.

Thanks Mike but I only paid $631 including shipping for the revolver.
I'm watching the GunBroker auctions.

Well, TinMan, unfortunately it's a fact of life that the big BA's are expensive. $600 for a VH10 is actually a steal, especially since the sight is probably worth as much as $100 and the mount for the sight is worth more than that. I know it's a high initial outlay but you will wait many moons for another VH10 to become available and the price will be higher by then. They are really rare. It's not uncommon to pay more for a VH10 BA than the whole gun cost you.
However, if it's really unacceptable to you, here's another Monson VH BA. It's an 8-inch and comes with the ported barrel so you'll want to buy a non-ported tube for it before shooting it (if you don't already know, ask me why):

It has 3-1/2 days to go and 7 bidders already so who knows where the price will go. Remember these things are rare, especially if you want original Monson roll marks.
If you can swing it...

Zoomm is very correct. With the alternatives to Dan Wessons costing more money for less quality (Smiffs) or far more money for similar quality ( Colts), all things DW are rapidly going up in price. They are bucking the national trend of falling prices due to a struggling ,debt ridden and overtaxed economy . Prices for Monson BA's are up over 50% in the last year. Certainly the longer ones are. My take on this is buy all the guns you can afford and then more. If there are multiple BA's it is a no brainer.Cecil is right, Buy matching BA's and be happy. Just the opinion of someone with far too many 15-2's and who can't stop buying more. I know!!! DWAS
