I thought it might be of some interest to post the different types of Barrel Wrenches that have been available over the years.
The wrench above is used on the older external barrel nut.
The wrench above is used on internal barrel nut versions of Dan Wesson Revolvers
The above door knob style wrench is also used on interval barrel nut revolvers.
The wrench above is similar to the second wrench with the exception of its construction which is made of plastic.

FYI-the first wrench you pictured (older external nut) is exactly the wrench I got with my (1978) 15-2. It came with a machined fitting that engaged the barrel nut, and had a hex nut that engaged the hole in the wrench
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
