After taking my 19 yr old son to the range and having a really fun time busting clay targets, I took my 10 yr old son to do the same. He has been to the range before but only shot at paper targets. Although eager to go "shooting", he easily gets bored shooting paper.
We started with a refresher course in gun safety and range rules. We then shot at paper to get a little practice. My son shot my Browning Buckmark, Ruger Mk ll, Ruger 10/22 and DW 22.
At 25 ft., using a rest, he was able to get 2" groups!! When we put the clays up at 25 yards he was still able to bust his share and then went on to pick off the pieces!!!
When all was said and done he has asked me to go back to the range almost every day. He wants to see if he is a better shot than his brother.
Here's the kicker, His favorite gun to shoot is the Dan Wesson. I guess that one will stay in the family for a long time.

He might be! ! He asks, "Hey dad, can I shoot the DW 15 .357 now?" When do you let a 10 year old shoot a big gun? Should I get some 38's or let him shoot a 9mm first? Or keep him on the .22? Both of his older brothers have shown great skills with both guns and bows and he is eager to show he is their equal or better. What are your opions? Thanks,Mike

If he can properly hold and support a DW 22, the 15 is the same size, weight, etc. I would start with .38 spl., something on the order of a target load wadcutter, etc. I would always introduce a newer/younger shooter to larger calibers on a wheelgun, a semi auto can too easily lead to uncontrolled follow up shots, unintended doubles, etc.
His first few shots might best be done from a sandbag rest off a shooting bench.
If he's safe with a .22, he's safe with any handgun he has the physical ability to control.
At sixteen, my son got me back into shooting, he wanted to learn how. I wish we had started earlier!
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
