Well, now I've done it.  I went to remove the barrel on my DW 738 this morning and destroyed the barrel nut.  It looks like not only is the barrel nut on the 738 smaller diameter but (at least mine) is softer metal.  The wrench cut two nice smooth ramps in the nut.

Now how do I get the nut off?

Save yourself the headache and just ship it to me... Laugh  I'll give good money for that beat up lil dan....

I posted this once before, but the wrench prongs are REALLY hard and will cut through anything.  You'll have to find an alternate method of removing the nut if it is stripped really bad.

If the nuts that gone try a small punch, stay off the barrel and shroud.

GoodLuck

I know this has been discussed Many times.  I've posted about using a heat gun on the shroud - worked on another DW I had bought (and since sold).  But this time I've destroyed the nut.

I seem to remember something about unscrewing the barrel and nut as one unit.  Obviously a homemade rig to just get the nut off.  But I can't remember the details or find the thread.

Well, Everything is for sale - just a matter of Too Much Money!

The punch trick was tried by the prior owner - he didn't have a wrench.  That chewed up the edge of the notch in the nut and didn't leave much for the wrench to grab.  I got my wrench from EWK.

I remember member Mox-CT  wrote something about SS being softer and using

brass washers or something like that when removing his stuck barrel nut.

Thought it was a good idea but can't find the post.

Mox seemed to know  a lot about metals, I think his job dose something....

anyway...yea ...take a break away from it and go at it with a fresh

set of eyes and mind in a day or two, that always helps.

I am thinking about using using a rubber washer to protect the forcing cone.  Something like faucet washer and back it up with the flat washer.

Good Idea ...maybe even a hard plastic white washers might work, worth a try first.

Be careful using a punch because when me and my dad were working on getting a stuck nut off we used a punch, and the metal was so soft that we ended up ruining the first couple of threads.  I ended up just taking it to a local gunsmith and he was able to get it off, but had to remove the first couple of threads so that I could get the new barrel nut on.

Another tip...buy EWK Arms barrel nuts and wrench for all of your barrels to save yourself the trouble GoodLuck

Yes, that's my gun (Eric, aka EWK started that thread).  And if you look in the classifieds, you will find it again.  Not the most recent 738, the one before it.

Look at the picture of the barrel nut - that's what happens if you try to use a punch and hammer (I'm guessing - it was that way when I got it).  Fortunately, the shroud and threads are fine.  It no longer looks like that.  Instead of a couple chips out of the nut, there are two long smooth ramps.

OK, I got the barrel nut off!!!

The problem, of course, is that the barrel wrench cammed out of the buggered-up barrel nut no matter how much force I used to hold it in.  So what I did was use a C-clamp to hold the barrel wrench in.  I protected the forcing cone with a washer and cleaning patch, snugged the C-clamp but not too much and quick turn of the barrel wrench - SUCCESS!!!

That's a darned good idea. There's no way the barrel wrench would slip out of the nut using that method.occasion Once again, necessity is the mother of invention.Laugh

Very smart solution, undoubtedly this will be useful to folks in the future.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

So what are you going to do for a barrel nut ?  Cut new slots ?

I've sent EWK an email to see if Eric can make me one.  If that fails, I'll try CZ.  Will probably try cutting new slots in my old nut too.
