kind of out of the box, but if I were in the middle of nowhere, there would probably be an ammo supply issue. I'd go with this:

The kids and I take them on every camping trip and shoot the tin cans leftover from dinner. My youngest is deadly with his...
Reminds me of a camping trip with a group of friends that call our club the "Knot Wrights" !!
Any how, some kids in our group had a water balloon slingshot, 3 man to operate it. It was a campground with a lake, summer time, just having fun. Most adults where having a few beers, and then....
A girl, 14? not in our group started teasing the boys and trying to get them to try to hit her with a balloon !! About 50yds away, wearing a bikini, dancing around daring them to try !! Boys is boys !!
Hit her right in the chest, left a big welt !! Went and told parents, claims boys had rocks in the balloon, it was heated, but still funny afterwards !!!
RULE CHANGE : NO WATER BALLOON SLINGSHOTS ALLOWED !!

And for the real question, When cold and wearing a jacket I usually carry my Walther P99 9mm 15+1 and my holster holds 2 extra mags, about 6JHP in first and the rest JRN.
More often than not, especially when warm out, I carry my S&W BG38+P and a few extra rounds. At 1.1lbs loaded, it fits in my pocket and can hardly tell it's there. No cocking, lost mag, just point and pull the trigger !!
The wife though, prefers a revolver, for those same reasons and she has a had time racking the slide on most autos. She lost the tips of her left index and middle fingers and can't grip the slide well (hand lotion doesn't help). I tried to teach her to hold the slide with her right hand and push with her left, this helps, but she still is slow and awkward.

I have been in competitions with both semi's and revolvers. I challenge each and every one of you to select you favorite model from each category, regardless of caliber and fire them continuously until they fail from build-up of carbon, lead and/or other build up and see what the round count is of each.
Think you know which one wins every time by a large margin ?

My unedjumacated guess would be a semi auto ?? I DO know from experience, my P99 will shoot over 500 rd with no cleaning, and stay accurate, never hiccup, jam or even look that dirty when cleaned. And can be partially disassembled (slide/barrel) in seconds with no tools !!
Revolvers are just cooler IMH

In a SHTF long term situation, I will take a .357 revolver over a Semi-Auto.
With a .357mag I can use .38spl and .357mag commercial loads. This doesn't include those .357's that are set up with a different cylinder for 9mm or are able to use moonclips either. I don't have to worry that my handloads have the perfect powder to work the slide and make the gun function. And I can use Black Powder. Really desperate? I can break down 9mm rounds and use the components to load up my spent 38/357 brass...

As a new member, I'm reading a lot of previous threads here and wanting to reply, so please admonish me if this is not welcome here (since many other places frown upon the practice).
I am very new to DWAS, but not to the practice of acquiring similar objects from other companies. So I have a lot of "articles" from which to choose.
I generally have the most fun shooting revolvers, most recently my DW's. Many pistols are very satisfying to me as well, especially Browning Buck Marks and CZ 75's. Kahr pistols are US made and very under rated too.
But overall, if I had to grab just 1 gun, it would most likely be a Combloc pistol like a Makarov, CZ 82, or the like, just due to their utter simplicity and reliability. Like for a AK in rifles. JMHO.

I have always been a revolver guy but am really into all kinds of firearms. At times I get the bug for semi-auto pistols and this year has been just that. I've come across too many good deals going on and have been buying up. This year alone I have purchased a few 9mm. A Walther, Ruger, Springfield, and a few 2nd and 3rd gen S&W pistols. I recently had an issue with a 3rd gen pistol that I bought where it wasn't completely extracting brass and getting stuck on the rounds. Turned out it was a simple spring/rod replacement; which since these are no longer being made did cost me a little more to find one in decent shape. I started researching out some things and didn't realize that most people recommend guide rod springs to be replaced after several thousand rounds. Now this sort of bothers and worries me. I like a lot of the older 9mm guns. I have never had that issue with a revolver. I've run thousands of rounds of 357 or 44 mag and they all run without a hiccup. I personally don't own revolvers that have been in the tens of thousands of rounds but I start hearing about timing issues around that number. It seems like a quality made revolver will outrun an auto when it comes to round count before issues start arising or parts need to be tuned/replaced. For me that does say something. I still carry both but I mostly carry revolvers.

A revolver is as simple as it gets
Not to single you out, but yes, a revolver is as simple as it gets
Gets less simple once you need a seventh, eighth, ninth ... shot RIGHT NOW.
Gets even less simple when you need to reload (in my case after #16) with another 15 ready to go
9mm is not as capable as .357 Mag in "one shot", no way am I going to settle for "one shot" when the chips are down. Along with Jeff Cooper, I am a firm believer in the Mozambique Drill. Two the chest, one to the head, repeat as needed.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

That sets me at 2 contacts before reload. I'm ok with that for the non-combat scenarios that I would expect to be in for every day carry (I'm not going to the fight but dealing with it when it comes to me). The number one hang up for me is being able to respond rapidly (at short range) with minimal action required on my part. Adrenaline will prevent a lot (most) of cognitive and associated actions so I need to keep things as simple as possible yet effective. A bit more bulk with my DW in concealed carry but weekly shooting from that carry condition has improved my confidence.
I am not as experienced as many members. However I have been trying to make up for lost time. My first gun was bought after the 2012 election. At home I have many guns to choose from but my truck gun is a SP 101 in 9mm I can carry too and reload very fast. If I was in self defense situation the gun I picked up yesterday would be my pick. A 3" Manurhin MR73 Sport model. The trigger is the best DA I have to date. My top 3 are the Manurhin, a 4" Python and a nickel DW model 14. I guess that that means a revolver. I also carry a Sig P938 for pocket carry. I just don't feel as secure with a semi.

I don't mean to get off topic but I use to ponder about this too. The thing is we now have revolvers that carry 8 rounds like the S&W 627 or the new Ruger Redhawk in 357. Both are large frame revolvers but they're made in snub nose versions which can be carried concealed. I know a lot of people who carry and shoot a 1911. These pistols normally hold 7-8 rounds. There are also 10 shot revolvers but they are in 22 caliber. But I don't know anyone who carries one on a daily basis.
A few years ago (2014) I was at a popular gun shop here in Charlotte, NC. I frequent there a lot and got to talking to the owner that day and out of curiosity asked him, "what are the top selling auto and revolver guns in the store?" He said the top selling auto that year was the S&W M&P Shield 9mm. The top selling revolver was the Ruger LCR in 38 Spl. Now that's just one store but I believe most people today carry some kind of compact gun that holds less than 7-8 rounds. Popularity in CWP's are driving these sales. When you think about it that sort of levels the playing field when it comes to round count. Not trying to debate which is better just saying that there may not be as much difference these days as people make it out to seem. Carry what you shoot best.
