Well I received my snubby porkchop barrel from forum member mycrobyte today . It is in excellent condition. I'm a 15 guy, but he and I attempted some history discussion, and I thought I would open it up here. Let's start - what's the difference between D and W models? and what is the diff between a 12 and a W12?
My W12 barrel is polished blue and has a W on the rear of the shroud with the standard high sight. the mycrobyte barrel has a D on the rear and is matte blue with a lower sight (I'm thinking this is a D11 barrel?).
Any input is appreciated; I'm wondering if I need to procure a W12 sight for the snubby shroud for it to shoot POA.
And of course...

Shoot- this is not really an answer to your question, but it is a link here on DWF detailing a substantial number of very early NIB guns and Packs that a seller made available here before auctioning them.
https://www.danwessonforum.com/?page_id=3/for-sale/low-number-dan-wesson-pork-chops-for-sale
I know that several of these found homes here. I think that the very early ones were D or W prefixes on the S/N, but the operative word is think
The guys that bought some of these will likely know more
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

yep, I perused that link before I made this post That's how I came up with the 11 / D11 theory... Mine has a SERNO of 796X, pretty high up there...I think.

Again, no real answers for your question, but I thought you would like to see some of the photos

Awesome--I didn't see those earlier. It is really cool to watch 80 photo's opening at once on your screen!

When I was looking at Microbyte's for sale pics, I couldn't decide if that front sight was short or not. Your pic definitely tells me it's short.
Here's what I know so far about old 'Chops. This isn't concrete data set in stone, there may be some descrepancies here…but from the ones that I have personally, this is what I know.
The -11- & D11 are service revolvers, with fixed sights & a low gloss finish. The rear sight is a separate part inserted into the frame, standing slightly above the frame. The front site is about 1/8″ shorter than the W12.

The -12- and W12 are target revolvers, with adjustable sights & polished finish. The front sights are fairly tall. These guns are a -12- model.

The first major change at DW sunk the barrel nut in the shroud, making it flush with the end. This brought us the Model 14-1 & 15-1.
I have a 14-1, it's a service revolver, with a low gloss finish & has the same exact sights as the D11 pictured above. A Model 15-1 will be a high gloss, with adjustable sights…I don't have one of those yet.

The sight on your gun looks to me like it's even shorter than this Model 14, which I can't decide on a good answer as to why that would be. It may have been changed by someone in the past, for a sight from a longer barrel…maybe, I don't know just yet.
Hopefully after I do some more investigative buying, I'll have the answer.
But yes, I think if you procured a front sight from a W12, you'd be shooting at POA. Nice looking 'Chop, BTW. 😀

I like the investigative buying idea I just got an e-mail from a guy selling a porkchop with what he says is a 5" barrel. He wants $275 firm. I don't have any pics or a model yet, but I'm going to go take a look at it! (and I'll probably be bringing it home!)
BTW, nice to see some other 14's out there... I have 2 of them.

$275 sounds like it's a sweet deal already.
Since you have multiple DW's you should take some pics of those babies & show 'em off in the "Member's Collections" area. We'd love to see the family.
I forgot to mention a couple things. The -11- & -12- were the first DW's made, they changed shortly after S/N 1616 to D11 & W12...don't know exactly when yet.
And the D11's were available in .38 Spl & .357. Mine is a .38 Spl.
Oh & there were some factory nickel guns from the get-go, too.

I've been told by many of my friends that there is a fine line between a collector and an ACCUMULATOR . I have a bunch of handguns up for sale right now in an effort to thin out 20+ years of collecting.
