Hey guys, I'm looking to get some barrels and shrouds for my 15-2.  The one I own only has a 6" barrel and I'd like to get at least one more length.

From reading the posts around here, it looks like gunbroker is the best place for factory barrels.  I've been watching that for a while and have seen everything from barrels like this one that need a lot of work, to ones that look brand new.

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=225889500

Are barrels in that condition worth buying?  If so, can you tell me what kind of costs I'd be looking at to get it restored?

Speaking of costs, what's reasonable for a 'shooter' barrel?  My personal threshold is whatever EWK is charging for his aftermarket barrels.  I'd like to think a 30 year old used barrel would be less than that, but if I can't find one, I"ll probably just get on his waiting list.

Since I'm still fairly new to everything DW, I'd appreciate any advice you have for me.

Thanks,

Lee

Hi Lee,

Welcome to one of the most helpful forums you could find for any advice DW.

As for the shrouds, there's a lot of personal preferences that come into play. From the factory, there were several different types offered. I would suggest checking out https://www.danwessonforum.com/archive/shroud-types

Once you figure out what works best on your gun and, which one you would like to get, then you can start looking to buy. As far as the quality of the shroud, I'd say go for the best you can afford. The reason I say that is, if you purchase one that needs some work, that work could easily cost more than what a really nice shroud would have cost. I have a 4-inch shroud for my model 15 that has a little bit of rust. I'm planning on doing some custom work to it so, that one will work just fine for me. All the others are pretty nice and will stay that way.

I can vouch for Eric's work and, if you wanted  a slab side shroud, I'd suggest getting on that ever-growing list. You won't be disappointed.

If you want a factory appearing shroud, keep your eyes on GB but also, don't forget to shop around in the orphan bins of some local gun shops. I found a 14-2 with three barrels for less than the three barrels were going for on GB. And, I got a lot of extra goodies with it. Patience is key, as well as having the cash on hand when the deals come knocking. You'll love shooting your DW and be sure to show us some pix! big-grin

What waiting list is this?  I thought we just waited until his website stopped showing "Sold Out" for everything like it is now?

The difference between a citizen and a civilian is that the citizen makes the safety of the body politic his personal responsibility.  The civilian does not.

Lol, there is a list I have of people that have e-mailed me saying they are interested, but so far with the limited production I have just posted them on the website and contacted a few people but not everyone.

Thanks for the advice guys.  There's a gun show this weekend, so maybe I can find something there.  That is if DWA_Midwest doesn't buy it all first.  😉
