Hello DW fans.

I was cleaning a DW 715 that I recently purchased and couldn't get the barrel nut off, or out, whichever is correct.  I used a steel tool with a decent size wrench and it wouldn't budge.  I took a small punch and tried to turn it both ways and it wouldn't move. I would like to get it apart to clean and adjust the clearance between the barrel and cylinder.

It was evident when I bought the gun that it had not been cleaned and maintained very well so I completely disassembled it, put it in the ultrasonic cleaner, and cleaned it well.  However I need help getting the barrel nut out so I can finish the job.

Thank you in advance for the help.

Steve

Sounds like you're doing everything correctly; submerge that end in Kroil for a few days.  If that doesn't get it to crack loose I'd guess someone used high strength locktite…  a little heat may help take care of that but watch your finish.  I use a soldering iron to help unfreeze small screws- never tried it on a stuck nut.

Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

rwsem is on the money for your next step. I also suggest removing the grip and hold it upright on a workbench. Install the metal barrel wrench and lightly whack the end of it a few times to help break the nut/ barrel bond. Heat is very helpful as a next step. I have a soldering iron tip that I have filed to match the slot in the nut. I hold it for a few minutes in each slot. It will help break the bond as well as thinning the Kroil or PB Blaster. The hot  smoking penetrating fluid seems to really work better than ambient temp out of can. Good Luck
