There were several styles of barrel tools. The plastic ones had different colors that seemed to represent the caliber but as with all things DW there are anomalies in the history. If you just need a good tool do yourself a favor and get the EWK tool. See side bar. If you are a history nut, good luck as you are in the mix with all us DWFers who chase any thing DW. Someone else may be able to shed more light on the color code.

It's been my experience that the color of the tool is probably based on what color they were making in any given month. I have red, yellow, and blue in .22 and also in .357.
I have red and blue in .44 and i have yellow, opaque orange and opaque black in .41.
There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason from my experience. It would have been nice if they stuck to one color for a given caliber. That way it would make it easier for us to determine rather trying to judge the size from the pics taken by someone who doesn't know what they are trying to sell.

Probably, the barrel wrenches for the large and supermag frame Dan Wesson's all use the same barrel nut. So if the pilot will fit in the muzzle it will work. For the optimum fit you want the correct pilot diameter which make EWK's tool the best value. All small frame Dan's also use the same nut. Example a 22 wrench will remove a 357 mag barrel if you are carefu,l but not the other way around. Same with a 41 mag wrench will remove a 44 mag barrel but not the other way around.
Caution; as always be careful removing the nut as damaged barrel nuts from sloppy removal tool use are not uncommon.

Here's my take on the various colored DW plastic barrel tools:
Tie a nice ribbon around them and hang them on your Christmas Tree. At least this way, you won't round out a barrel nut and create a mess, and they will sparkle nicely as the lights shine on them.
Consider that a strongly held opinion.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
